Few plants are as ideally suited
to Texas landscaping conditions
as the hollies. They’re durable, at-
tractive and easily grown. Most
are equally suited to sun and
shade, and most offer the extra
bonus of mid-winter color. Fact
is, they’re stars of wintertime
landscapes wherever they’re
grown.

There is no charge for the
classes, but participants are ask-

Mature size ranges from tiny
two—foot shrubs (dwarf yaupon
holly) to majestic small trees
30—40 feet tall (American holly).
Fruit color ranges from bright
shinny red to orange, yellow and
purplish— black. One important
note, though: most hollies bear
male and female flowers on
separate plants. Male flowers pro-
vide pollen, while the female
flowers set the fruit. Always try
to buy a plant that actually has
some fruit on it, so you’ll know
you’re getting a female. There are
exceptions to the rule, as you’ll
see in a moment.
Hollies do best in well prepared
soils. Mix in generous amounts of

organic matter (peat moss, com-
post, shredded bark).Keep the
plants well watered and fertilized.
Most hollies don’t wilt, so you’ll
have to check their soil regularly
to be sure they’re not getting too
dry. Use a complete and balanced
plant food analysis, one where all
three numbers are about the
same.
The Best Types.... Hollies
The Chinese holly group is one
of the most important in Texas
landscaping. Patriarch of the line
is the rough Chinese holly,
pact, it’s dark green and it’s love-
ly. Mature height is under 3 feet,
making the plant one of the finest)
low shrubs. Its bold texture mere- /
ly adds to its beauty. All dwarf
Chinese hollies are male selec-
tions. None will bear fruit.
Burford holly and dwarf bur-
ford are both sports of the
original Chinese holly. Each has
thick, dark green leaves with just
one spine at the end. They’re no

fruit. Yaupon holly is the third
of the big three. Regular yaupon
is native over much of the eastern
third of the state, so it’s adapted
to our climate and soils. Use it as
a large shrub, a hedge or a small
tree. Leaves have no spines and
berries are a showy bright red.

holly, but its leaves are twice as -2
large, twice as green arid twiceas ,
vigorous. The berries (also pro-
duced on all plants) are like small
marbles—really spectacular.
