Legislative Matters,
Notwithstanding the opposition of
ex-Governor Hogg, the House on
last Thursday passed the Rock
Island and Frisco consolidation bill
by a large majority.
The senate committee on stock
and stock raising, after many days
of discussion, last week reported
favorably on the Bryan quarantine
bill. Senators Decker, Willacy,
and Hill will submit a minority
report.
The senate bill repealing the
occupation tax on merchants has
been passed by the House with the
provision that it sh-t.ll not go into
effect until June 1905. The passage
of this measure will cut off three
hundred thousand dollars of the
state's revenues, which will have to
be provided for by other means.
A resolution has been adopted by
both houses of the legislature and
approved by the Governor, ordering
that all school and asylum lands, on
which leases may expire, be with-
held from sale for a period of ninety
days, or until a law can be passed
providing a better method of alotting
auch lands. The object of the resu
lution is to prevent the rushes that
are now common whenever these
land sare thrown on the market.
There is a bill now pending in the
Legislature to carry into effect ths
y oil tax amendment, in which it is
proposed to require every man to
jay his poll tax in person, or, if
{.aid by his direction by some other
person, that he must have repaid to
i,uch person the amount so paid prior
to the first day of February preced-
ing the clectioa at whish heoiísrs O
vote. This bill is now the special
order under consideration by the
Senate.
District Court.
The March term of the District
Court convened Monday, all the
officers of the court being in atten-
dance, and will continue in session
this week and next. The following
civil cases are on the docket:
Greer Mills Company vs. O. H.
Nelson et al, foreclosure of deed of
trust.
Nannie Bowman vs. Pecos and
Northern Texas Railway Co., suit
for damages.
\V. H- Rayzor vs. Hugh Howard,
suit for damages.
Chas. B. Farwell vs. Pecos and
Northern Texas Pvailway Co., suit
for damages.
Silas Johnson vs. W. G. Roberts
suit for damages.
L. M. Forrester vs. A. A. John-
son et al, suit to establish land
title
Lula L. Williams vs. Pecos and
Northern Texas Railway Co., suit
for damages.
Hugh Howard vs. W. H. Raysor
and T. A. Moore, suit for damage?.
In addition to these civil cases
there are several of a criminal
nature on the docket.
Election Notice.
Notice is hereby given that an
election will be held Monday,
March 23, 1903, in the city of Here-
ford, at the court house, in the
couuty of Deaf Smith, State of
Texas, for the purpose of voting for
a mayor, a marshal and five alder-
men tor the said city of Hereford.
