Students approve constitutional changes
•New constitution provides for executive, judicial, legislative branches, checks and balances
By KARA KELTON
Staff Writer
The student body voted last week in favor of amend-
ing the Student Government Association (SGA) consti-
tution. This new constitution will bring several modi-
fications to the way students are used to seeing the
government run.
. The new constitution, proposed by the SGA Execu-
tive Council, was accepted by the SGA general assembly,
40-7. It was then recommended to the student body for
amendment.
On Thursday, March 2 and Friday, March 3, students
voted on the changes, which passed. The polls were on-
line at the Tarleton State University main Web page.
"Our SGA constitution has become outdated and in
many ways in-effective/' SGA president Casey Hogan
said. !
>
Tjie new constitution restructures the current stu-
dent government to an arrangement very similar to that
of the national government. The re-organization opens
more leadership roles to members and sets up a system
of checks and balances,
Executive, judicial and legislative branches will be
formed. The legislative branch will contain a senate and
hduse which will serve to represent the students. .
The Student Senate will consist of 14 class senators:
two freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors, three se-
niors and three graduate students.
Other changes require the student body president
and vice president to run on the same ticket. Students
running for vice president must now be a sophomore,
junior, senior or graduate student when they take the of-
fice.
These changes take effect for the upcoming spring
2006 elections, and the new constitution will be imple-
mented on June 1,2006.
Applications for the positions of president, vice
president, college senators, class senators and the Texan
Rider were made available Monday, March 6. Applica-
tions can be submitted online at the main Tarleton Web
site and will be out until March 20.

Tarleton women
play integral role
in school history
By KARA KELTON
Staff Writer
The month of March is National
Women's History Month. The month is
dedicated to celebrating and recogniz-
ing women and their contributions that
have helped: to j5hape and change our
history, country, society and lives.
Women's history was first nationally
recognized as, National Women's History
Week in 1981. Six years later, it expand-
ed to cover the entire month of March
in 1987, after petitioning by the National
Women History'Project (NWHP).
There are many important women
in. Tarleton's history. Several were vital
in the founding, and,improvement.of the
university.
Lily Pearl Chamberlin was Tarleton's
first female faculty member. The Home
Economics Department was founded by
Chamberlin. She also wrote the "Found-
er's Song" for the first "Founder's Day"
ceremony.
Pearl Wiley Cage was a Tarleton
supporter, often referred to as the
"under-appreciated benefactor," The
wealthy, civic-minded woman donated
much of her money/ and her time to Ste-
phenville and Tarleton. When Tarleton's
A&M adoption project failed, Cage got
the money needed to move the proposal
forward. j
Willie Akers George was the first
woman appointed < to the Texas A&M
Board. She was appointed chairman
of the Board Committee, were she con-
trolled John Tarleton Agricultural Col-

failing efforts to raise money for a me-
morial stadium. Westbrook reached the
$75,000 goal and today, thanks to her ef-
forts, we enjoy the use of Tarleton Me-
morial Stadium.
Two Tarleton women helped to pave
the way for other women to follow.

Tarleton. Thompson was honored at the

SGA vote changes Rider status
•Mr., Ms. TSU election criteria modified to allow juniors to run for titles
By STEFANIE JOHNSON
Managing Editor
La^t week, the Student Government Association (SGA) voted to
change the current election code. One of those changes made the
Texan Rider part of the Athletic Department instead of Student Life.
Another changed the criteria for the Mr. and Ms. TSU elections.
SGA President Casey Hogan believes that the mascot change will
be a positive one for the future of the Texan Rider.
"With the Texan Rider being part of the Athletic Department,
they will be able to be much more involved," Hogan said. "Now the
Texan Rider will be required to go to all home games and will be able
to travel with the cheerleaders to away games."
The way the Texan Rider selection will work now is that all ap-
plicants will audition before a panel with representation from both
the Athletic Department and Student Life. This tryout will consist of
a Tarleton spirit and tradition test, a two minute live performance and
an interview. The committee will then pick the top four applicants,
and those will be voted on in the main election by the student body.
These changes will take effect in April with the new Texan Rider
for the 2006-2007 school year.
The changes to the Mr. and Ms. TSU election will now allow both
juniors and seniors to run for the positions.
Applications for all elected SGA positions and Texan Rider were Francisco Reyes/The J-TAC File Photo
