"A new year means a new season for the
Tarleton softball team. Despite being
picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star
Conference South Division, the TexAnns are
very optimistic about the upcoming season.
Last season the TexAnns finished with a
record of 26-22, but were later awarded
three extra wins due to an ineligible player
on an opponent's team to give them a 29-19
record.
With eight returning players, six transfers
and two freshmen, the TexAnns look to
make a run at the Lone Star Conference
Championship.
"Pitching has got to be the backbone this
year," commented head coach Julie Mata. '"I
feel that we've improved in all three aspects
of the game from last year, which is impor-
tant in order to win the Lone Star
Conference."
Mata is entering her seventh season as
head coach for the Tarleton softball squad
along with seventh year assistant coach Rus
Mayes.
Being picked to finish fourth in the LSC
South Division doesn't seem to bother
returner Staci Greear. "It motivates us and
gives us a chance to sneak up on teams who
don't think we're good," Greear said,
Greear, who was an All-Conference out-
fielder last year, returns as one of three cap-
tains and will be a key player for the
TexAnn squad.
Jami Lovejoy, another captain, also will be
a vital player for the TexAnn softball team.
Lovejoy returns to the team after having a
successful junior year in which she led the
team with a .353 batting average. She plays
third base.
When asked about this year's team,
Lovejoy said, "A difference this year from
last year is that we're working together and everyone wants to win."
Joining Greear and Lovejoy as top returnees will be senior Cheryl Dickens and juniors Carla Geeslin
and Lauren Morton.
dickens, who led the team in steals last season, the third captain, will resume her role from last sea-
son as shortstop. Geeslin will lead the TexAnns pitching staff after being plagued with arm problems
last season, Morton will make an impact behind the plate.
The TexAnns also will depend on some of their transfer players in order to have a successful season.
Monica Garza comes to the Tarleton softball team after two successful years at Galveston College
where she had a .383 batting average last season, a ,408 batting average as a freshman and had a com-
bined 13 homeruns. The smooth swinging lefty is expected to add plenty of pop to the batting lineup
this year.
Neva Parrott brings speed and a good arm from the outfield to the team. She joins the TexAnns after
playing two years at Collin County. Parrott is excited about being a part of the team. "I've never been
on a team that has such great team chemistry, and I just hope that I can contribute to the team," Parrott
said.
Another transfer to keep an eye on is pitcher Amy Bristow who comes to Tarleton after a year at Paris
Junior College. The hard throwing sophomore is expected to help the pitching staff this season.

season at home on february 6th
