MP3 provides
new tunes to hack to
By Justin Taylor
Entertainment Editor
I recently bought Jay-Z's
third album and was confident
: in the decision. I enjoyed the
numerous tracks and two hid-
den bonus cuts on the CD
because I had only heard one '
of the songs on the radio before
the compact disc hit the stores.
1 figured Jay-Z had kept his
secret of his songs on lock
down until I recently went over
a friend's house on Friday
night.
He lazily ushered me into his
computer room and proceeded
to play me a new Jay-Z song. I
asked him what CD that was
from, and he responded that it
was not on a CD but rather
only online and in MP3 format.
Upon further research I was
informed that the song was
popular on the internet, so Jay
Z had to reformat his domestic
, album not to include the song.
He simply used different ones,
which were available on the
internet the first day the CD
released in New York. So I
ended up spending 16 dollars
on a CD that I could have basi-
cally downloaded in two
hours. Which brings me to my
question: what's up with this
MP3 pandemonium?
It seems I'm not the only per-
son who has found MP3's to be
,a double-edged sword, The
Recording Industry Association
of America (RIAA for short)
has filed lawsuit against two.
prominent MP3 web sites that
allow web surfers to download
MP3 files and against a tech-
nology firm that has created a
portable device to play MPS
flayers.
MP3.com claims it is a virtual
CD player that allows for users
to find and download most
music but the person must own
the CD first.
Another internet site, . . , i,
www.Napster.com on the other
hand, doesn't even do that. You
simply download the program
and get to work finding the
song of your choice. However,
some universities are now ban-
ning the use of Napster on
their school campuses because
of the use of excessive band-
width.
What does this to do the
recording industry? Well, it
seems at this moment they are
totally screwed. What has this
portable MP3 done to the audio
industry? It has totally screwed
them as well. Why? Because
now I don't have to pay any-
thing to get that new CD. I
could simply browse the inter-
net, find some hacker site that
runs MP3s and download it for
free. I could have the songs
before the CD comes out, due
to leakage within the music
industry. The portable MPS
player would be a ,CD of your
own personal favorfte songs.
No skipping or scratching
would damage the CDs. Just
data that can be compressed.
Already there is the technology
to put these MP3 songs in CD
format via a CD writer,
I do believe the only person
to come out on top in the music
irtdiistry at this moriient are the
comput£r li terate consumer!*1 It
seems the digital world has"
become their oyster, with the
songs of their choice right for
the plucking, or in this case,
downloading.

The Beach causes sunstroke to the mind
By Rochelue'd;1 gregory 1 1

If you have any preconceived
notions about what The Beach
is about, you might as well
leave them at the door. This
movie is NOTHING like the
previews—not that there is any-
thing wrong with that. The
Beach stars Leonardo DiCaprio
(in his first venture since his
famous role in Titanic) as
Richard, a twenty-something
American looking for an adven-
ture in Thailand, but finds him-
self bored with the usual
"touristy" stuff. So when he
comes across a map to a mythi-
cal island paradise, he jumps at
the chance to find paradise.
While Richard does find his
adventure arid paradise, he
learns it is not on the confines
of the island but within Ms
mind. He leaves reality, both
physically tfrncfcrkantally. i
When he does come crashing
back to Earth, Richard learns
that the only
true paradis- ■
es are found
within our-
selves.
And when I
say he leaves
reality, I
mean it, this
boy loses all
touch with
the real
world—both
the real
world of civi-
lization and
the real
world of sanity.
Perhaps that is the best thing
about this movie?is how:8urnit
prising the plot is. I had this
movie already pegged before I
bought the ticket,
and I was so
wrong. So many
movies today
aimed at the
Generation X
audience are just
plain stupid, pre-
dictable,
cliched...(Like,
oh, maybe,
,Scream 3!) Trust
me, The Beach is
nothing like I
■ thought.
Created by the
Skoal iothe^t*: team who
brought us Trainspotting
(which I absolutely loved!).
The' Beach is a hyperkinetic;'
fast paced barrage of images
that works hard to keep its
intended young audience pay-
ing attention. And that is prob-
ably the biggest problem with
the movie.
Sometimes the movie goes
too fast—it doesn't leave you
any time to absorb what it is
you are watching before it has
already moved on without you.
And if you are going to this
movie hoping to see Jack
Dawson from Titanic, stay
home, rent Basketball Diaries or
Romeo and Juliet, and then go.
Trust me, Richard ain't no Jack
(thank goodness). This movie
deserves 4 stars on the Pulse
Scale.
