THIS ONE SOUNDS A r.n ii.f HOLLOW!

Krueger.

$565,000 behind in repayments. I don't mind him treating his own finances like chump change, I do not want him'
doing the same with my tax dollars.
Senator Krueger has been characterized as a conservative democrat who takes a fiim stand on issues, yet even
his fellow democrat challengers take
exception to this. In the DAT J,AS
MORNING NEWS former Attorney-
General Jim Mattox referred to
Krueger's hot and then cold stand on
{he gays in the military issue by say-
ing "He seems to have difficulty
standing up straight It's just a flip-
flop on the issue" As to the magic
modifier "conservative", Kruger has
made much of the fact that he could
not cote in favor of President Clinton's
budget Sounds conservative to me.
Still, it seems a tad out of character
for a man who is ranked as one of the
biggest spenders in Congress having
voted fa- 94% of all spending meas-
ures as a Congressman. As railroad
commissioner his budget grew by
37%. This doesn't sound like the
type of guy who would vote against
the grandiose give-away budget his
pajty leader has requested. What
gives? Could it be that Senator
Krueger is coming up on an election
here in Texas and the powers to be
realize that, since most Texans would
probably not vote for someone who
could suroo|t .it, m^ybe it-jnight be
wise fqr Krueger to play responsible
until,pftcr the election. Do I soui^l
cynical — I hope not? On March 26,
the HOUSTON CHRONICLE re-
poled that the Krueger camp denied
that there had been a discussion about
this convenient waffling while on the
same day in the HOUSTON POST
we read that '"there was no surprise,
they didn't ask me to change my
vote.' said Krueger of his discussion
with white house chief of staff
Mac McLarty." Then, in the
March 26 HAT f AS MORNINC,
NEWS appeared the following
"A senior aide to Mr, Clinton
said Thursday that Mr. Kueger
had 'a nod' from the white house
to vote independently on budget
matters if he deemed it neces-
sary to protect his position be-
fore the election."
That White House nod repre-
sents the worst sort of sleazy
good ol' boy politics. It demon-
strates not only what is intrinsi-
cally wrong with that corrupt
kind of network but the degree
of contempt that politicians like
Krueger and Clinton have for
the people they govern.
