Campus fear may
cause irrationality
Fear and tension exist at Tarleton State University.
However, it is important to remember that fear and irrationality
go hand-in-hapd.
On February 12, the same day that a female Tarleton student was .
assaulted near the women's residence halls, a student (also female)
was stopped by officials for carrying a machete. A machete is a large
knife, which presumably she intended to use as protection in the event
of an assault.
Some may think she had the right idea, but those who examine
the situation more rationally will realize that this incident indicates
the possibility that tensions are too high on campus.
Students should NOT be armed. Students walking around with con-
cealed weapons are not an op'tion. If one student carries a knife,
another will soon carry a gun, and no one will be able to feel safe
on campus.
No one will feel safe knowing that the next person they bump into
may be carrying a weapon, no matter what the intentions behind it are.
Students should not allow themselves to reach this state qf panic.
This behavior, along with the current tensions will only lead to unplea-
sant and possibly tragic conclusion.
Students (including male students) should be aware of steps being
taken by the Campus Police to provide a safe environment and work
to help develop programs to organize security programs.
Taking the duty of defending peace at Tarleton should not be taken
up by idividual students with their own weapons, but by an organiz-
ed Tarleton using the strength of numbers.

Ben applauded
Dear J-TAC:
i
Just wanted to say, "Bravo!
Ben Tinsley," on your editorials
in the February 8 issue. Looks
like the score is Common Man
- 1; Elite - 0.
By the way... hey you,
"renegade prophet,'' why don't
you get a real life and stop try-
ing to sound intelligent?
Sincerely,
James Pringle
Column attacked
Dear Managing Editor:
I am writing in response to Mr.
Tinsley's article "Voting useless
when unfair." I am sick of Mr.
Tinsley's holier than thou, self-
serving attitude. In his article, he
berated Student Government
Association and the Greek
systems He failed to mention that
he, himself, was, at least at one
time, part of both. Knowing him
at that time I would say that he
made no' great contribution to
either one. Knowing him at the
present, I feel he now makes no'
great contribution to the J-TAC!!
In his article, he said that these
elections should riot go to the
undeserving "cream of the
crop." I think that those
nominated are all very deserving.
What do you think constitutes
a real Mr. or Miss TSU? The
person who goes to class and
studies all the time to make a
high GPA, but does not care
about TSU?
Or the person that goes to
class, studies, gets involved in
campus activities (such as frater-
nities, sororities, student govern-
ment, Block-n-Bridle, 4-H, and
so on.,,) because they do care
about TSU?
If you look back at past
nominees, you will find people
who are out, bringing hoppr and .
f recognition to.Tarleton because,
of their employment, communi-
ty involvement, involvement in
the TSU Alumni Association,
and their committment to ex-
cellence. Let's cite some ex-
amples, shall we?
Darryl Schriver-fonmr class
favortie and Mr. TSU nominee-
presently serving as a legislative
aid in Austin
David Bates-iovmei Mr. TSU-
currently earning a Master's
degree at Texas A&M to pursue
a career in research
Brent Walker-totmsi class
favorite and Mr. TSU nominee-
currently attending School of
Osteopathic Medicine
Ann Harvey-former class
favorite and Miss TSU nominee
currently working with the Ft.
Worth District Attorney and ser-
ving on the reelection committee
for Tim Curry
AND Tarleton's very own
Dean of Students, Rusty Jergins,
who serves as the Vice President
of the Cross Timbers Tarleton
Alumni Association.
Darrell Brown, who serves on
Tarleton's Police Force, Was also
a class favorite nominee and Mr.
TSU. I also feel that those
nominated this year will bring
honor and prestige to Tarleton in
the future.
Mr. Tinsley also stated in his
article that we spend all our time
trying to be popular. None of us
ever spent ten to twelve hours a
day working on Homecoming,
just to be popular. We did this
so Tarleton alumni would be pro-
ud to come home, and current
students would be proud to have
them here. And, I personally
have a lot of better things to do
than to sit at a voting booth.
(Which, I might add, would not
have been able to stay open if it
had not been for the help of the
candidates.) No, we do the things
we do because we made a com-
mittment to Tarleton. We did this
by getting involved.
Unfortunately, there are those
people, who instead of getting in-
volved, sit back and chastize
those who are involved. These
are the same people who criticize
political candidates but do not go
to the polls to vote, complain
about employees who get promo-
tions, but are not willing to do
the extra work that would get
them a promotion, and those who
are positive nothing will ever
change in this world.
Where would Germany,
Czechloslavakia, and'the Soviet
Union be if the people who were
willing to get involved and
change things had listened to
people like Mr, Tinsley and sat
back and let life pass them down.
Sincerely,
Janette Jergins
J-TAC censored?
To the Managing Editor:
Does the J-TAC print
everything its writers bring in or
do they check into things to see
if they are correct or worthwhile
to print?
Obviously not. If things had
been checked, the article on
voting fairness would not have
been printed.
, For starters, the SGA is com-
posed of elected senators who
give their own time to work in
the voting booths. All members
are expected to fill in when they
are needed. The polls would have
• been closed several hours last
week if people nominated for
favorites and Mr. and Miss TSU
had not worked these booths. I
realized this was happening and
did nothing about it. Why didn't
I prevent it? Because my job is
to keep the voting booths open.
I was in charge of the commit-
tee that rewrote the bylaws last
organizations who work for the
campus. In the future, I would
ask that the J-TAC print the facts
instead of half-truths and
falsehoods seen last week.
Tom Hughes
Too much apathy
Dear Managing Editor:
This letter is written in
response to the letter written by
Mike Cope in last week's J-
tac;
No one is forced to vote. The
"offices" of Mr. & Miss TSU
are not offices - they are an
honor. These people are very in-
volved students, they have good
grades, and they care about
Tarleton State University. These
ar^ the most visible people on
campus, otherwise they would
not be on the ballot. Apparently
more than one person on campus
thinks they deserve to be
recognized for their involvement!
And NO! Education is not the
only thing we are here for. The
whole college experience is one
that will shape our lives forever.
And furthermore, the recipients
of these honors do not look down
their hoses at you. If they were
that type of people they would
not have been nominated in the
first place!
The reason most of student
government is greek is because
the majority of people who vote
are greeks. Tarleton is a grow-
ing university. It is not like high
school where almost everyone
more than one vote to be ' 'HIGH
LORD BUBBA." Think about
it. '
Sincerely,
Anne Turner

semester, so yes, I knew; what
was happening and was happy to
have the candidates helping.
The organizations on campus
have the right to join together if
they wish and vote as they wish.
The question of ethics aside, it
is still their right.
The SGA was accused of keep-
ing the student body in the dark
about elections. However, these
dates were announced in Senate
meetings and were not given
great publicity by the Editor of
the J-TAC, who sits in on every
SGA meeting. Therefore, I
blame the J-TAC for not infor-
ming the student, body it is
designed to serve.
The two people who won Mr.
and Miss TSU are nice people
and have well over a 3.0 GPA,
and we do not need a writer in-
structing us on who to honor.
Those of us who voted for each
of the candidates had reasons for
doing so. By the way, YES! Mr.
and Miss TSU IS a popularity
contest.
Now to explain a bit about our
hypocritical writer. He seems to
forget that people know him so
I'll introduce him to the readers
of the J-TAC. Ben Tinsley is an
active member of a fraternity and
was the editor of the J-TAC who -
sat in on SGA meetings last
semester. He presently is a writer
for the Legislative Information
Service of the SGA. So as you
can see, our little feature writer
is a big hypocrite.
I feel that the stories printed in
our school newspaper should be
positive and not negative and also
supportive of the people and
knows your name and who you
are. Belonging to a large
organization such as Block &
Bridle, the Rodeo Association
(which is the largest organization
on this campus), a professional
organization such as Pi Sigma
Epsilon, or even - Heaven for-
bid - a greek sorority or frater-
nity makes you as an individual
known to large number of poten-
tial voters.
If more Tarleton students
would sign up to be senators and
if more of the student body
would go vote, there might be
more non-greeks on student
government.
Is there anything wrong with
voting for people on the ballot
that you know and think are
capable of doing a good job?
Isn't that what a republic is all
about?
So, "take Student Government
away from the greeks..." That
is your right as a voter. Use it or
lose it!! In fact, why don't YOU
run for an office? And once you
are elected, do away with these
"silly elections!"
And the comment that Mr. and
Miss TSU can , accomplish
nothing else than beign Mr. &
Miss TSU is quite a paradox! Not
only is it a paradox, it is totally
untrue! Because, to be in such a
position to obtain this honor
means one must have already ac-
complished many other things.
These might include IFC Presi-
dent, student government
senator, Junior Class President,
and believe me, the list goes on
and on. i
And one last thing. It takes
Dear Managing Editor:
As a student at Tarleton for the
past 6 years, I have participated
in, many intramural sports,
among which basketball was my
favorite!
This was the first year I was
not involved on a team but I did
get a chance to see several
games. As a spectator, I couldn't
help but notice just how biased
student referees can be and how
rediculously unsure they are of
the definition of "foul."
The most rediculous game I've
ever watched is definitely the
championship game between the
"Hozers" and "Show Time."
The game was underway for less
than a minute when one of the
refs came to the bench and ask-
ed about a rule. I found it
strange, but did not think twice
about it until he came back within
the next minute asking about
another rule, giving the excuse,
"Well, I don't know. I've
NEVER called a girls game
before!"
That sure caused a second
thought and I couldn't help but
wonder why he was calling a
girls game if he did not know the
rules! The championship is not
the time to learn them.
Needless to say, he called the
rest of the game like he wasn't
sure of any rules, and the irony
of his confusion is that he gave
a player a technical for commen-
ting on the things he missed when
he obviously should have thank-
ed her because he needed the
help.
Each team pays an entry fee of
$30, and I was always under the
impression that part of the money
went to pay the refs. If that is
true, why can* t we pay refs^ wher
at least have a good idea of what
they are doing? Such as, a per-
son can not walk with the ball,
can not stand in their lane for
over "10" seconds, can not run
-out of bounds while dribbling the
ball, much less what a foul is,
regardless of the sex - male or
female.
I know all refs are not that bad
and I understand everything is
just a judgment call. They can't
see everything at one time.
Some say give the ref a break;
he doesn't know what a foul is
and neither does anyone else -
spectator or player. So for the
record, WHAT IS A FOUL?
Maybe I should ask a member of ,
the Hozer team for they surely
led all records of a team to
receive the most fouls in any in-
tramural game.
My congratulations to the
complete Show Time team for
not stopping the game and
beating up any Hozer teammate.
In all fairness, you can't blame
the Hozers for the way they play
- they've played that way for as
long as I've been here and not
one single ref or other intramural
director has been brave enough
to remind them it's just a game.
Not a boxing match. Maybe they
shouldn't change their ways. Just
their sport and try out for the
Tarleton Texan football team. Or
maybe talk Coach Giles into star-
ting an intramural wrestling
.game. I'm sure they would
"manage" to come out on top!
As for Hozer player number
22 - iwhile shaking the other
teams' hands (or should I say
slapping?) after the game, you
made the comment, "If ya'll
would get an attitude, maybe
ya'll could play ball."
Perhaps you should have said,
"If ya^ll played as dirty as we do,
you npght have won the fight -
I meap, game."
And it seems that you need to
change your attitude and
remember intramural sports are
supposed to be for fun, .not to
drum up business for the
Stephenville Emergency Clinic! '
