Dynamic Season Ends
By Michael Marbach
Sports Editor
A crowd of 3,650 fans
gathered at memorial stadium
with high hopes of seeing their
Tarleton Texans venture into
;; another round of the NAIA Na-
ful as one might think. They
defeated Austin College with lit-
tle trouble, but it took six teams
to go down in defeat for the Tex-
ans to be ranked 20th National-
ly.
After sneaking into the playoffs
$i:tiqnal ^playoff$*. ^owever the v-v- with Texan luck they wejre fac-
Westminster Titans ended the
Texans season with a 34-0
defeat. This was a big disapoint-
ment to many, yet the kind of
season the Texans had was in-
credable.
The Texans started off the 89
season like gang busters
thrashing each villian in their
path. They took a first place posi-
tion with little surprise and
started inching their way toward
a conference championship. Yet
the road to the top was tough as
the Lobos and Yellowjackets
stood in the way.
With just two weeks to play in
the regular season the Texans
were faced with two major
challenges. The first of which
was defeating the Austin College
Kangaroos and then hoping two
make the playoffs.
They did both, but not as color-
ed with a bigger challenge. This
challenge was ranked fourth Na-
tionally and sported the number
one defense in the NAIA.
Dodge City, Kansas was the
sight and St. Mary's of the Plains
was the team. The Texans ven-
tured to Kansas with high hopes
and high hopes they acomplish-
ed by defeating St. Mary's 16-6.
These 16 points came against a
team that had only allowed 13
total points all season and had
managed to limit opponents to
150 yards per game. The Texan
offense took care of that by rally-
ing for 300 plus yards and three
scores.
The Texan defense showed the
number one defense what
number one was all about. They
limited St. Mary's to six points
and less than 150 total yards.
This led to the showdown with
the number one ranked National-
ly Westminster Titans. The
Titans came into the game on a
24 game winning streak and
defending a National champion-
ship.
This would be the Texans fourth
trip to the National playoffs, an4
the Titans 10th time to make a
run at the National title.
The Texans were overwhelmed
by the Titans thrashing defense
and unstoppable offense.
The game started off with the
Texans playing like crazed dogs.
However, it did not last long as
the Titans managed a ball con-
trol offense.
The Texans could not get
anything going offensively and
the defense was unable to stop
the overpowering Titan offense.
The Texans went down 34-0, but
with heads held high.
Nailing down a co-championship
and making it to the playoffs it
a successful season for any team.
The Texans just do it with a lit-
tle more style.
