. PHI ETA SIGMA OFFERS
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
Any'eligible senior member of
Phi Eta Sigma may apply for one
of the graduate scholarships. For
the undergraduate award,
however, the sophomore or junior
class member must be nominated
by the local chapter. Any eligible
member of Phi Eta Sigma who is
interested in applying for one of the
awards or scholarships should get
in touch with the chapter adviser,
Dr. B-J• Alexander in Room 101
. of the Science Building.
National deadline for nomina-
tions for the undergraduate awards
and for applications for the
graduate scholarships is March 1.
Application forms are available
from the local chapter adviser.
Local deadline for submission of
applications if February 16,1990.
TPE awarded
STEPHENVILLE, TX - The
student chapter of Tau Phi Ep-
silon at Tarleton State Universi-
ty was selected as the Outstan-
ding Student Club by the Texas
Association of Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and
Dance. The award was presented
at the TAHPERD annual conven-
tion held recently at the DFW
Hyatt. TPE president Jill
Ihackerson ofHico accepted the
award for the chapter which in-
cludes PE majors of minors at the
University. Twenty-five students
and seven faculty members were
on hand to represent TSU at the
state meeting.
Two other Tarleton students
brought recognition to the
University as they were selected
as recipients of the 1989 Conven-
tion Scholarship Awards. Chad
Heath, a senior Physical Educa-
tion major from Valley Mills, and
Melinda Richburg, a senior
Elemetary Education majorfrom
Roscoe, were among 20 students
from across the state selected for
th^sclibiarships.
Tarleton junior Julie
Etheredge of Georgetown was
nominated as president of the
Student Section of TAHPERD.
Althought she was not elected,
the nomination and campaign
brought distinction to her and the
Tarleton Student chapter.
"We are extremely pleased
that our students were recogniz-
ed on the state level for their
worjc and dedication," said Dr.
Joe Gillespie, Chairman of the
Department of Health and
Physical Education at TSU.
' 'Our students have developed a
reputation in the TAHPERD as
responsible and respected future
physical educators and these
awards were well deserved. "
Several members of the TSU
faculty took an active part in the
TAHPERD convention by con-
ducting workshops and chairing
various sections. Penny Wright,
an instructor at TSU and Direc-
tor of the Texan Stars dance
team, served as chair of the
Dance Related Activities Section
and presided over the business of
the organization as well as
moderating a workshop presen-
tation entitled "Holiday Fitness,
Texas Style. " This workshop was
attended by more than 300 dance
instructors in public schools and
institutions of higher education
throughout Texas.
Tarleton A thletic Director Dr.
Ron Newsome was section chair-
man of the Boys' and Mens'
■ Sports Section at the 1989 con-
vention. Dr. Newsome organiz-
ed a panel discussion entitled
"Drugs and Today's Athlete,
Fact and Fiction, Truth and
Rumor. " Included on the panel
were two recent Tarleton
graduates, Darryn Willoughby,
who is currently working on his
Doctorate in PE at Texas A&m
* University, andRobyn Conover,
athletic director at Hondo High
School. Dr. Gillespie was elected
of this section and will be
heading up the program at the
1990 convention.
SPA begins
The first SPA meeting for the
spring semester will be held on
Thursday at 5:15 in the Guadalupe
room of the Student Center, all old
members and those interested in
joining SPA should attend.
Writing a song, dancing a Texas
two step or improving clerical skills
fire the topics of classes beginning
the week of January 29 in the Divi-
sion of Continuing Education at
Tarleton State University.
Country and Western Swing
Dancing has become a standard for
the CE adult education program of-
fering couples a chance to gain
some experience and confidence on
the dance floor. Texas' most
popular country and western
dances are taught in the six week
course including the waltz, Cotton-
eyed Joe, polka and Schottische.
Dr. and Mrs. James Larimore are
instructors and the class meets
Thursday evenings from 6:30 to
8:30 beginning Feb. 1. Enrollment
is $12 per person or $22 per
couple.
The class begins Tuesday, Jan.
30 and will meet weekly from 7
to 9 p.m. Registration is $28.
Welcome, TSU
Professional Educators of
T. S. U. will be hosting a Welcom-
ing Social, Friday, January 19. At
this time the place and time have
not been set. Please watch for signs,
posted throughout the campus for
further details.
Meetings will be held in the Cave
on the 2nd Wednesday at 12:10 and
on the 4th Thursday at 4:00, unless
otherwise posted.
Yay, Teresa!
Teresa Petross Jones, a
sophomore Industrial Technology
major at Tarleton State Universi-
ty, was selected as the first reci-
pient of the K-Bob's Industrial
Technology Scholarship.
TASP stings
As a First-time freshman, you
MUST take the TASP test.
If you have not taken the TASP
test, the deadline of January 26 is
fast approaching for applications
to take it this spring. Some students
will not be allowed to attend
Tarleton State University in the
1990 Summer of Fall semesters if
they do not take the TASP test this
Spring. NO WALK INS ALLOW-
ED. Test application forms are
available in the Admissions Office.
See your advisor or testing office
for clarification on your current
status regarding TASP.
