TSU Instructor opens home to student
By Melanie Fowler
. Reporter
Lorrie Stahl, Lecturer for the
Math Department, has opened
her home and family to a new
member.
Maiko (Mai) Aizawa, 17, is a
foreign exchange student from
Japan who is living with the Stahl
family while she attends Stephen-
ville High School.
Mai is from Chibu, Japan, a
suburb outside Tokyo, and will
live in Stephenville for a year
before returning to Japan.
Before coming to Texas, Mai
attended St. Paul's Academy in
Concordia, Missouri for four
months to study English. She had
studied English previously while
living in Japan.
Mai says she is adjusting very
well to her new home. "The
students and teachers at Stephen-
ville are very nice and helpful,"
she said.
Lorrie [Stahl] said that Mai
was surprised when she realized
that Texas had trees. In the past,
Mai had seen movies that por-
trayed Texas as desert country.
One of the few linguistic dif-
ficulties Mai has encountered is
the Texan accent. "You [Texans]
talk faster than the people in
Missouri," she said.
Mai thinks Americans are too
competitive and serious about
sports and do not enjoy them.
She is currently taking a physical'
education class with the Stephen-
ville basketball team — basket-
ball being one of her favorite
sports.
She also enjoys swimming,
bicycling, camping, and her new-
ly found talent, water skiing.
Mai wants to watch American
sports on television, which John
Stahl, Lorrie's husband and a big
sports fan, thinks is great.
Lorrie said that one of the
reasons her family picked Mai to
live with them was because of her
fondness for camping. Her en-
thusiasm towards these activities
has helped her adjust to her new
family.
Mique, the Stahl's seven-year-
old daughter, said she always
wanted a brother or a sister, and
likes the fact that Mai loves to
swim too.
Mai enjoys art and is taking art
classes in school. The Stahls say
that Mai is talented at Origami,
a Japanese art of folding paper
to form figurines.
Part of her talent in art, says
Mai. mav come from her
mother, Kimie, who hand-made
dolls for her before she left
Japan.
The Stahls plan to take Mai to
Wisconsin to visit Lorrie's
parents during Christmas vaca-
tion. Lori plans to take Mai to the
Art Institute of Chicago.
Mai is looking forward to the
year ahead and hopes to further
her education by attending a col-
lege in the United States.
