TexAnns win in overtime
By GAYDEN HAYS
^Sports Editor
Tarleton State University's
women's basketball team advanced
their season record to 8-3 after a 70
to 63 overtime win over Lubbock
Christian University in
Stephenville,
The TexAnns overcame a 10 point
first half deficit, and came back to
win after a 3-point shot by Kim
Kirgan tied the game up with very
little time remaining, sending the
game* into overtime. This was the
first three pointer that Tarleton has
hit all year, which makes the shot
that much more spectacular.
During the overtime period, the
TexAnns out-scored LCU 12 to 5,
rolling to a nine point victory, and
taking home their first overtime vic-
tory of the season.
The leading scorer for the second
week straight was Caren Stroleny,
who added 17 points and 13 re-
bounds to the winning effort. Help-
ing out in the scoring was Kirgan,
with 15 points of her own.
Tarleton should have run away
with the game, but hit only
25-percent of their shots and scored
24 points in the first half. The Tex-
Anns came right back in the second
half shooting 50-percent and, using
TexAnn Scores: Tarleton's womens basketball team came
back from a 10 point deficit to beat Lubbock Christian in
overtime 70 to 63.

a hustling defense, shut down the

The TexAnns dominated the
boards by pulling down 40 rebounds
and forcing 30 turnovers, many of
these turning into points for
Tarleton. Lisa Lewis, Tarleton's
point guard, lead the offense and
dished out six assists while stealing
the ball six times.
For the year, the TexAnns are
shooting an impressive 42-percent
from the field, averaging 68 points
a game, while the defense has allow-
ed their opponents to score only 64
points a game on the average.
The TexAnns will enter con-
ference play this week when they
meet Howard Payne and McMurry
in the TIAA pre-season tourney to-
day in Brown wood. Tarleton is once
again picked to win the conference,
and this should be a good test for
the team. Earlier in the year, TSU
played Austin College and Sul Ross
State, beating both of them again
and showing their dominance in the
league.
This being their twentieth an-
niversary, the TexAnns will once
again prepare to sing another reprise
of "We are the Champions" and
head for their twelfth championship
in 13 years.

Texans trounce dogs

The Tarleton Texans advanced
their record to 7-5 this past week
with a trouncing of the Jarvis Chris-
tian Bulldogs 97-79, but were
beaten by the Oklahoma Baptists
94-78.
, The Texans added new player,
Jeffery McFadden to the roster this
semester. McFadden is a player who
contributed 37 points and 14 re-
bounds in the Jarvis game. Also
helping in the scoring punch were
Mark Smith, a 6-foot 4-inch
freshman forward from El Paso who
scored 21 points, and Roy Howard,
a 6-foot 9-inch freshman post from
Houston, who added 20 points, 22
rebounds, and blocked a team high
5 shots.
Tarleton beat the Bulldogs by
shooting an impressive 51 percent
from the field, and out rebounded
Jarvis 64 to 33.
The only strike against the Tex-
ans were the 20 turnovers that
allowed the Bulldogs to stay in the
game as long as they did.
The next night Tarleton traveled
to Shawnee, Oklahoma to play
Oklahoma Baptist. The Texans were
hanging tough and leading at one
point, until Roy Howard and Jeffery
McFadden got into foul trouble, and
finally fouled out of the game. This
left the Texans short of their two
leading scorers.
Tracy Guy, the Texans outstan-
ding guard, took up the slack by hit-
ting 5 three-pointers on his way to
scoring 19 points. Before leaving
the game, Howard added 12 points,
and McFadden had 16.
The Texans shot a dismal 40 per-
cent for the game while Oklahoma
shot a scorching 53 percent. The
Texans would have been defeated
by a larger margin if it had not been
for their piay on the boards.
Tarleton enters the new semester
by gaining McFadden, but lost two
players due to ineligibility. The
players lost are Rodney McFadden
and Melvin.Thompson,,, who will,
not play the rest of the season.
Tarleton opens conference play in
the TIAA Pre-Season Tourney
tonight in Abilene against Howard
Payne, and will then play McMurry
Friday night, also in Abilene. The
Texans next home game will be
against Howard Payne, January 21.
//
Hook Shot: Jeffery McFadden Tarleton's outstanding post
moves in for the shot. McFadden has averaged 26.5 points
per game for the Texans.

Tarleton State University's Jef-
fery McFadden was named the
Texas Intercollegiate Athletic
Association's player of the week for
the first week of basketball after
Christmas break.
McFadden, a 6-foot 8-inch post
from Atlanta, Georgia playing in his
first two games as a Texan, shot
down the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs
when he scored 37 points in a 97-78
win, Friday, in Stephenville. Satur-
day he shot over 53 percent and
scored 16 points, with 8 rebounds
in a loss to Oklahoma Baptist.
McFadden's two game total was
53 points and 22 rebounds while
shooting 66 percent from the field.
Coach Reisman says McFadden is,
"very talented, with tremendous of-
fensive skills in the paint." Along
with his offensive skills, he should
prove to be an excellent rebounder,
largely due ten his outstanding size
and mobility.
McFadden transfered to Tarleton
from Lon Morris Junior College and
has received other awards in his col-
lege career. .While at Auburn, he
played on the team that advanced to
regionals before they were beaten
by Indiana in the NCAA Tourna-
ment. During his brief stayyat Lon
Morris he was named' to the All-
Conference team. "If he wants it,
he can be one of the premier players;
in the NAIA." said Reisman. "He
has only to prove he wants to play
at that level."
Also nominated for the award
were James Swoopes of McMurry,
with 49 points and 15 rebounds in
his last two gsfmes, and Carl Penn-
ington of Sul Ross, with 42 points
and 11 rebounds in two games.
