Dear Editor:
In your last edition of the

the problem of conservation

year now. I hope that you

his views in a recent issue on what a newspaper is and
what it stands for. Al does a good job of figuring these
things up and it sure does save your scribe a lot of
thought.

Dear Editor:
For a little more than
seven years I have been
observing the youth of our
community. These observa-
tions have caused me to
express appreciation and
gratitude for our youth
many times. This past
Saturday was no exception.
Though all the youth of the
community were not pre-
sent, the group that at-
tended the Track Meet, I
believe, is representative of
our youth.
The track meet to which I
refer was held in Grapevine
with some eight schools
represented and at least one
Southwest Conference scout.
But that’s not the main
point. The main point is that
I was most impressed with
the conduct of our youth
both in the meet and in the
stands. One could hear all
sorts of language being used
VD problem is
and one could observe all
sorts of abuses to the
Grapevine facility. Our kids
were not involved. Our kids
competed in an outstanding
fashion, displaying the best
in sportsmanship, and they
did win third place. Not
once did I hear any of our
kids expressing themselves
in the language of so many
others.
My hat is off to the youth
of the Allen community. Not
only do they have a keen
spirit of competition, they
have a deep desire and
dedication to being winners.
They have proven this in
the past, they are proving it

Most complaints we re-
ceive, however, are settled
without the need for litiga-

My staff members follow
up every complaint we
receive until some type of
settlement is reached, at
which time our files are
closed.
If you have any further
questions about how the
Attorney General’s office
handles consumer prob-
lems, consult staff members
of my Consumer Protection
Division in our main office
in Austin, or in a regional
office near you.

ONE OF THE FAVORITE stories of Allen's Grover
Mathews bears repeating.
Grover says a citizen of a Texas town committed
suicide severals ago. His reasons for doing so were
found written on a scrap of paper in his left boot leg.
"I married a widow with a grown-up daughter,the
letter stated. "My father visited us frequently, fell in love
with my step-daughter and married. And so my father
became my son-in-law and my step-daughter became my
mother. Some time later, a son was born to me, who
thus became my father's brother-in-law and my own
unde on account of being a brother to my
step-daughter.
"My step-daughter also gave birth to a son, who was
certainly my brother and at the same time my grandson.
Through all this my own wife was my grandmother. I
was at the same time my wife's husband and grandchild.
"In consequence, the husband of anyone's
grandmother must be his grandfather. Thus / was my
own grandfather, which was more than I could stand. ‘‘

every week, and about 85
written complaint forms
come in during the same
time span. The Attorney
General’s regional offices in
Dallas, Houston, San An-
tonio, Lubbock, and El Paso
also receive many calls and
letters each week.
Legal work on such a
scale requires that our
system be efficient, or else
complaints might go un-
answered or be delayed for
weeks or months.
Here is how we go about
handling the calls and
letters we get regarding
consumer problems:
When a complaint is
received by letter or tele-
phone, a standard com-
plaint form is sent for the
consumer to complete. It
gives us the basic facts
about the business transac-
tion and provides space for
the consumer to describe
what he feels happened.
Copies of contracts, sales
receipts, advertisements, or
other pertinent documents
relating to the matter
should be enclosed with the
complaint form. If it is
difficult for a person to get
copies, we ask them to send
us the originals, which we
duplicate for our use, and
return to them.
If the returned form
indicates that there may
have been a deceptive
business practice, misrep-
resentation of a guarantee
or warranty, or false or
