Meats team places in California

The TSU Meats judging team placed
first, at the fourth annual California In-
tercollegiate Meat judging contest. The
contest was held on February 22 at the
Harris Beef Ranch, Selma California.
Tarleton team members included:
Quin Jenschke and Rhonda Lochte of
Frederichsburg, Hugh Ragsdal from
Early, David Engluitt from Denison
annd Mike Ondrasch from Crandall
Texas.
Mr. Hines, Animal and Meat Science
instructor from Stephenville is the
coach. Other team awards included a
first place in carcass grading.
TSU placed many in the high in-
dividual competition, including Quin
Jenschke, who was high individual
overall and first in carcass grading also.
First the team v ill leave for TAMU
to work out, then the team will go to
Houston to compete for a third straight
win.

The latest estimate of retail
sales from the Office of the
State Comptroller shows
decreases in sales levels for
three area counties for the
third quarter, 1985 while two
counties marked increases
when comparisons were
made to the July-September
period of 1984.
According to a study done
on five Cross Timbers area
counties, when third quarter
1985 sales levels are com-
pared to the same period in
1983, all counties except
Bosque showed increases.
Total sales for the first nine
months of 1985 exhibited
patterns similar to those of
the third quarter.
William Beaty, Assistant
Professor of Social Sciences
at Tarleton State University,
said that according to figures
released recently Bosque
County marked total retail
sales of $12.2 million in the
third quarter of 1985.

totaled $34.8 million. "This
was significantly below the
figure for the same period of
1984 and was only slightly
above the total for the first
three quarters of 1983." he

Comanche County also
posted a sales decrease dur-
ing the third quarter of 1985.
The county's total of $15.1
million was 6.1 percent
below the year earlier level,
but was 8.9 percent higher
than the total for the same
three months of 1983.
Comanche County retail
sales for the first nine months
of 1985 totaled $45 million,
slightly below the figure for
the January-September
period of 1984, but
significantly higher than the
1983 level.
Eastland County's third
quarter retail sales totaled
$25 million, 5.5 percent
below the corresponding
figure for 1984, but 2.3 per-
cent higher than the tally for
the July-September, 1983
period.
Total retail sales for the
first nine months of 1985
were $115.1 million. This
figure was higher than the
corresponding totals for both
1983 and 1984.
Hamilton County showed
strong retail sales growth for
both the third quarter and the
first nine months of 1985,
Third quarter sales totaled
$9.3 million. This was 14.6
percent higher than the 1984
level and was 24.7 percent
above the figure for 1983.
Total retail sales for the
first nine months of 1985
were $25,1 million. This
reflects increases over the
tallys for the same period of
both 1983 and 1984.
