Use study time well
By LYNNA FULLER
It's time to hit the books
again, finals are just around
the corner. Many students are
thinking this, but if they don't
know the subject by now, they
probably never will. Studies on
the best ways to prepare for
final exams say that reviewing
is the best alternative.
A study from the University
of Texas says that many
students have to learn the sub-
ject for the first time when
they begin to study for finals,
due to poor management of
time during the semester.
The first few weeks of
classes should set the habits
and patterns for the rest of the
course. The study adds that
even students who are doing
average or better academical-
ly could improve self-discipline
and school work with a little
more eficiency in time
management.
Specifically, getting tutors,
studying with others and
scheduling study times will in-
crease the chances of passing a
final. To study with a group,
plan a session three or four
days before the exam. On the
night before the scheduled ses-
sion, study only a few chapters
fully and simply skim the
others. Then at the session,
students can ask one another
questions about the chapters
they covered.
The best way to keep from
putting off studying is to keep a
daily schedule of the amount of
time you plan to study each
subject. Write it down rather
than just having it in your
mind. Cross out each item as
you do it. If it is impossible for
you to adhere to such a strict
schedule, try to keep things as
normal as possible.
Another way to insure plenty
of study time is to learn to say
no to invitations. Best friends
can sometimes be a bother if
they don't have to study at the
same time you do. Just buckle
and say no. You'll be glad you
did.
A general lack of concentra-
tion is common throughout the
semester and becomes
epidemic during finals. Avoid
it by never studying one sub-
ject for more than two hours at
a time. Ideally, you should
study each subject 50 minutes,
with a 10 minute break bet-
ween subjects.
Write a paragraph about
each major topic reviewed.
Review concepts and put them
in your own words. You will
remember them better if you
do.
Finally, a lack of sleep will
endanger your mental capaci-
ty. Four hours is the least
amount of sleep you can get
and still be able to function ef-
fectively. A well-balanced diet,
physical exercise and recrea-
tional activities are important
when making study plans.
