BFA available
in Fall '84
BY ANNE FINCHER
If you could act, sing, dance, enjoyed art,
building things, and computers, and were an
undecided major at Tarleton, which direction of
study would you take? This might have been a dif-
ficult decision in the past, but no longer.
Beginning in Fall 1984, students at Tarleton will
be offered a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.
It will involve study in three major areas of the
Fine Arts-music, art, and theatre.
Dr. C. John Keith, Head of the Dept. of Fine Arts
and Speech said this degree will be very practical
for the arts and would be ideal for the person in-
terested in musical theater.
Students would be able to walk out of our depart-
ment and go into professional theater studio work,
or graduate study in the fine arts," Keith said.
This degree prepares the student for a very
broad variety ox work, since it is often difficult and
impossible to get a very specialized job, such as a
movie actress.
"What is really outstanding about the BFA is the
breadth of preparation the students will receive,"
Keith said. No other BFA anywhere requires the
academic load that this one does.
"This makes the degree not only rare in Texas
where only Stephen F. Austin College has a BFA of
similar structure and lesser sophistication, but
rare in the whole country.
Academically speaking, Keith said the degree
will involve six hours of study in computer infor-
mation systems, preparing the students to run the
light and sound computers housed in the Fine Arts
Center.
In planning for the degree, Keith added, "We
have not overlooked a single thing."
Keith felt that there is no limit to what can hap-
pen to the enrollment of the department once this
degree has had time to fully operate. It will be a big
asset to the cultural education of the entire Cross
Timbers area, he said.
