Tracksters defeated in
Border Olympics
Joe Gillespie has always
been a firm believer of
omens. Thus, when the
sprint relay team dropped
the baton in the first race of
the 51st Annual Border
Olympics, he knew he was
in for a long day. The Tex-
an track team collected on-
ly ten points compared to
35 at last year's event.
A poor handoff beween
Gary Gayle and James
Conley was the result to the
Texans' misfortune. It
marked only the second
time in 11 years with
Gillespie at the helm that
the Texans failed to com-
plete the relay.
A bright spot for the Tex-
ans seemed to be the letter-
man, With the exception of
Gilmer freshman Markcef
Fluellen, only the ex-
perienced tracksters
qualified for the finals.
Reaching the finals, which
were marred by a constant
30 mph wind, were seniors
Gary Bowdoin, Javier
Tamez, James Doughtery,
and sophomore James
Hawkins.
After running 5000
meters in 15:52 on Friday
afternoon, Tamez came
back Saturday morning to
qualify for the finals with a
4:05.021500 meter clocking,
despite the gusty winds.
Tamez finished ninth in the
finals later that after-
noon,crossing the line in
4:12. Tamez is the only
Texan track member to
reach the finals in a
distance event at .the
Border Olympics two suc-
cessive years.
Defending high jump
champion, Hawkins'
chances for a second title
disappeared as he knocked
the bar off at a height pf
7'0". The San Antonio
sophomore had to settle for
the bronze medal with a
clearance of 6'9".
Bowdoin wasn't about to
let anything keep him from
placing in his event for the
third straight time. The
Crawford senior pushed
himself to a 55.60 second
clocking in the 400 meter
intermediate huddles (his
best performance of the
year).
Doughtery also had to
battle the high winds in the
javelin, but managed to
•grab, sixth place with a
13i'3" toss. Flullpn stepped
his ;way to a sixth place
finish in the 110 meter high
hurdles.
