Basketball teams kick off season
-Tin* men's and women's
basketball teams at TSU*
wili get an early start on
the basketball season when
both learns tip off the
season Tuesday night at
home in Wisdom Gym-
nasium.
The women will start the
ball rolling with a 5 :30 p.m.
game against Ranger
Jufiior College, The men
will start their season at
7:30 p.m. against the
Crusaders of the Universi-
ty of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The TexAnns finished the
season last year with a 22-8
record and tigd for the
Texas Intercollegiate
Athletic Association title.
They return four of the five
starters from last year.
The missing starter is Wan-
da Byrd, the career scoring "
leader in women's basket-
ball, who graduated off the
team.
To take up the slack,
head coach Jan l^owrey
picked up three junior col-
lege transfers from
Weatherford. All three are
former Brock High School
standouts. Joining the Tex-
Anns are junior Kay Cole, a
5'10" forward, and
sophomore twins Paula
and Patti Phillips.
Top returning players for
the TexAnns ase
sophomore post Jennifer ,
Washington, sophomore
forward Becky Bates,
junior forward Honda Ed-
wards and junior forward
Tina Proctor. They finish-
ed second, third, fourth,
and fifth behind Byrd in
scoring last year.
L/)wrey plans to start
Washington at the post with
Cole and Edwards at for-
: ward and Proctor at a
wing. Either Patti Phillips
or sophomore DeAnna ?
McKee will start at point
guard and Bates may also
get the call to start at tor-
ward.
"Hanger will have
played a few games by the
time they face us," says
Ixjwrey. "All reports in-
dicate that they'll be a de-
cent team. Who they play
will dictate who we will
,start against them and
. what type of offense we'll
run."
The Texans will get quite
a challenge when they go
up against the taller,, more
experienced Crusaders in
the night cap. The Mary
Hardin-Baylor team
features five seniors and
five players over 6*5" tall.
The Texans finished last
year with an 8-17 overall
mark and most of their vic-
tories came late in the
year. Head coach Sherman
Perry is hoping some of
that momentum carries
over to this season.
Leading the way for
Michael L. Chambers
gave a senior seminar
about the theory and ap-
plication of animal
acupuncture. This seminar
was given in fulfillment of
A.H. 4003 and was held in
the Ag building room 173 on
November 4.
In the seminar the
history, theories and uses
of acupuncture were given.
James Lair will give his.
senior seminar Thursday,
Nov. 11 on parasite
resistance to an-
thalmenics.
Gymnasts get new floor
The Tarleton gymnastics
team received a new spring
tumbling floor.
The floor, received last
Thursday, has foam
squares underneath
plywood, which will enable
the team to perforin better.
The old floor was pur-
chased last year by a
private gymnastics club in
Beaumont.
The floor was replaced
because of the greater
durability of the new floor
compared to the old one.
Tarleton will be junior
guards Koss Taylor and
Glen Schuelke. Taylor is
the premier guard in the
district and Schuelke is
equally competent in runn-
ing an offense or scoring.
David Schumacher l,
back to handle the post
position and freshman
Mike Gentry has looked
very good in practices. At
forward, the Texans have
transfer Greg Sparkman
doing well and freshman
Jerry King could be the
answer to the rebounding
problems the Texans have
had.
Brian Stewart, a starter
at forward last year, has
been slowed by an ankle in-
jury. He should see playing
time along with freshman
forward Greg Brown and
freshman guard Freddy
Pierce,
