Gillespie on fast track
by Jeff Litherland
"Successful recruiting,
' dedicated athletes, and
hard work is what makes
the Tarleton track team the
best year after year," says
head coach Joe Gillespie.
Gillespie came to TSU in
1973. In the two years prior
to his arrival the team had
not scored a single point in
a conference meet.
With no time to recruit,
Gillespie was forced to
compete with a team of on-
ly seven members. Track
at TSU was only a spon-
sored sport in the Lone Star
Conference.
The team has made
steady improvements year
after year. In 1975 they
moved up to fifth place
among 10 teams, rhis was
the first year that Tarleton
was represented at the na-
tional meet. Also, this was
the year that TSU had the
seventh best mile relay
team in the nationals.
In 1976 they again cap-
tured fifth place in the con-
ference. However, their
overall point total moved
up about 45 points. It was
this year that Gillespie
coached Charles High and
Mark Barnes. High took
fourth place in hurdles at
the national meet and
Barnes placed sixth in the
high jump.
In 1977 TSU left the Lone
Star Conference and
became part of the TIAA.
Ever since this move, TSU
has won every conference
championship in track.
Gillespie is proud of the
fact that he coached the na-
tional champion triple
jumper, Moise Pomenay.
Also, since 1974 his teams
have set 13 conference
records.
In the fall, Gillespie
leaves the track team and
becomes the defensive
coordinator for the TSU
football team. He says, "In
the fall the track team has
to work on their own. This
is when dedication plays a
big role in being good.''
In football, Gillespie
coached the number one
defense in the nation in
1978. Every year that he
has coached the Texans'
defense, the unit has finish-
ed first or second in the
conference statistics.
. Gillespie was raised in
Coleman, where he attend-
ed high school. He enrolled
at McMurry College, where
he participated in football
and track.
Before coming to TSU, he
taught high school in Lub-
bock. Now completing his
eighth year at TSU,
Gillespie intends to have
another winning season in
track.
The first test for the team
was on Feb. 17 in a practice
meet versus Ranger Junior
College and McMurry. The
official track season gets
underway for TSU March 5
at the Border Olympics in
Laredo.
