Before getting into the
subject of stress manage-
ment, I would like to put a
plug in for TSU students
and faculty to consider tak-
ing advantage of some of
the continuing education
courses which TSU's Jerry
Stephens has lined up for
this fall.
Of special interest to me
is "Management by
Strengths." A system of in-
sight into a way of building
self-confidence and con-
fidence in relationships,
it's been the most helpful
seminar which I have
taken.
It's offered to TSU
students at a reduced cost.
Why not' see if your pro-
fessors will free up the en-
tire class that day to take
this special relationship
building seminar"
Are you starting to feel a
little confusion, weariness,
maybe even an occassional
battle with the blues®
Sometimes after the first
round of tests those feel-
ings pop up. Stress is all
around us - it is a part of
life at its worst and at its
best. Learn to make stress
work for you, not against
you. Our whole health is
what is at stake.
Here's some tips I have
found helpful and which
students have reported
work for them, too:
1. ."vctfpt si i ,*ss as essen-
tial to qualify life i when we
use it to do so, stress can
help strengthen body,
mind, spirit).
2. Be good to yourself
(treat yourself as you
would a best friend).
3. Sleep and eat well il
know who that sounds like,
but I also recall being an
"under-pressure," go-all-
the-time student).
4. Get outside yourself
(get to know lots of dif-
ferent people; reach out to
the lonely; volunteer to
work in some community
helping program).
5. Don't hesitate to get
health care (medical,
counseling, etc.).
6. Make friends with
stress (see it in this light
rather than as an enemy).
7. Learn health stress
reduction, that is, relaxa-
tion methods (more on
"how" next week).
Someone has put it in
words like these:
"College is an adventure:
You many discover how
able and interesting a per-
son you are!"
Topics you would like
covered can be left at the
J-Tac. I would like to hear
from you.
(A health service provid-
ed by TSU and the Student
Senate is confidential
counseling with a Pecan
Valley MHMR counselor.
On campus in the Health
Center, free to students,
from 14 p.m. Wednesdays.

One purpose of a
newspaper is a source for
communications, but i;
seems that there is a com-
munication breakdown bet-
ween this paper it lie
J-TAC) and the students nf
TSU. On the heading of the
J-TAC, this paper pro-
claims to be a •"student"
newspaper. However,
after reading the last two
issues, I am wondering if
the J-TAC has become a
"faculty" newspaper.
Now don't get me wrong,
what the faculty and staff
of Tarleton accomplishes is
important and should be
reported, but there lias
been a definite lack of stu-
dent exposure, except for
the coverage of the football
games. Although I have

Since most of you receive
annuals anyway by paying
university tuition costs,
you may as well have your
name and picture put in the
book. Hours are generally
not a problem, since the
photographer stays all day.
Surely, all students can
find a time during the day
that corresponds with the
photo hours.
Letter to editor
Dear Editor,
Mr. /Newman's attitude
-jJjfjui his concern '.or his
'paycheck is totally uncalled
1'or and selfish in every
respect. First of all, 'lexas
is not "so-called" — it IS a
great stat'.
Newman hiated "And on
the eighth day God created
the Texas A&M University
System and it was good
and il was iniallible." It
took God seven days to
create the heaven and the
earth. Why can't the
infallible A&M System take
seven more days to produce
a few belated checks?
Yes, we agree that some
people have major i>ilis to
pay, but believe it or not
there conies a time when
everyone sl.ould learn to
budget themselves. Do
without a few e\tra
luxuries (partying, dm.kmg,
etc. i and spend your nu>ne>
where the importance lies.
The trouble with the world
today is that everything
is handed to them on a
"Silver platter." Very lew
people have to really get
out and work to make a
living or put (hemselves
through school. Then again
there are those who never
seem to get ahead no matter
how hard they work.
