Enrollment increases this fall
Enrollment at TSU for the
1980 fall reporting period stands
at 3,592, according to TSU
registrar John Whiting. This is an
increase of 5.55 percent over the
same period last year. The final
enrollment in 1979 was 3,403 for
an increase this fall of 189
students.
The increased enrollment
came from freshmen, up 145
students, and sophomores, up 89
students.

be interested in.
Juniors were down by nine
students, seniors by one student,
and special students dropped
eight. The largest loss was in
graduate students, with a decline
of 27 students.
By sex, there are 1,965 male
students attending Tarleton this
fall and 1,627 female students.
This marks the eighth
consecutive year that Tarleton
has shown an increase in
enrollment in the fall semester.
Miss Rodeo Texas Pageant
Plans are underway for the
1981 Miss Rodeo Texas Pageant
to be held January 14th thru 18th
in San Antonio.
Miss Rodeo Texas of 1981 will
be recipient of numerous prizes,
including a hand-tooled saddle
from Ryon's, a $1,000
scholarship, a gold and silver belt
buckle, chaps, spurs, and a
western wardrobe. She will also
receive the use of a new pickup
and trailer during her reign. All
Expenses are paid during her
year of travel and for her trip to
the Miss Rodeo America
Pageant.

December 25th.
Funeral services
held for Paul Walker
Funeral services for TSU
sophomore Paul S. Walker were
held Sept, 16 at St. Luke's
Episcopal Church, adjacent to
the TSU campus.
Walker, a lifelong resident of
Stephenville, was the son of Dr.
and Mrs. Robert Walker. Dr.
Walker is the TSU Graduate
Dean.
Paul was found dead of a
gunshot wound at 6 p,m. on
Sept. 14 at his residence at Pole
Hollow Trailer Court.
Evidence suggested that the
wound was self-inflicted.
His death was ruled by the
Dallas County Medical
Examiner's Office as the result
of a self-inflicted^ gunshot
wound. However, his father said
he is "not totally satisfied with
that ruling."
Cremation followed the
funeral service, and interment
will be in West End Cemetery,
Stephenville, at the grave of
Paul's sister Sarah, who died in
1965.
Brooks and Ballow honored
Morton P. Brooks will receive
the 1980 Distinguished Alumnus
Award at TSU's homecoming
Oct. 18 with Cecil C. Ballow to
be honored as Distinguished
Staff Member.
The awards will be made at
the annual Distinguished Alumni
Luncheon to be held in the TSU
dining hall starting at 11:30 a.m.
Brooks, who served seven
years as Chief of the Student
Financial Aid Section of the
U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare (HEW), is
a former TSU student and
former Dean of Men at TSU. He
received an associate degree
from TSU in 1928 and later
graduated from Texas A&M
University with a B.S. degree in
electrical engineering. In 1948 he
received the graduate
professional degree of Electrical
Engineer from Texas A&M. He is
a registered professional
engineer.
Brooks also holds M.S. and
M. Ed. degrees from Trinity
University, and an M.A. degree
from Texas Christian University.
He has done work on his
doctorate at the University of
Houston.
Brooks has served as
president of the TSU Alumni
Association and is currently
serving on the board of
directors.
He and his wife, Edna, a
former TSU student, have two
grown daughters, Martha of
Dallas and Shirley of Atlanta,
Ga.
Brooks is a native of Mt.
Vernon and is currently living in
Dallas.
Ballow is a native of
Stephenville and a graduate~of
Texas A&M University. He
served with' the U. S. Army
during World War II and
separated with the rank of
captain. He was in the insurance
business in Stephenville two
years prior to his appointment as
Dean of Men at TSU in 1948.
Ballow retired Aug. 31, 1979
after serving more than 30 years
as Dean of Men and Dean of
Student Personnel Services at
, TSU.
While at TSU he served on
the Executive Committee and
the Academic Council and was
chairman of the Athletic Council
14 years. He was also TSU's
faculty representative to the
Lone Star Conference and the
Texas Intercollegiate Athletic
Association.
Ballow also served as baseball
coach at TSU from 1951 to 1969
and carried the TSU team to the
National Junior College finals at
Grand JUnction, Colo, in I960.
He has served on the board of
directors of the TSU Alumni
Association since its
organization and was an
organizer of the Texan Club. He
was also instrumental in the
construction and renovation of
Memorial Stadium and the
construction of the Frazier
Track.
Ballow and his wife, Marie,
are living in Stephenville. They
have three children and seven
grandchildren.
