TSU salaries to be the topic
of next local lACTTrieeting
by Sandee Lawry
The preliminary report of the
local TACT (Texas Association of
College Teachers) chapter's
Faculty Salaries Committee will
be discussed at Wednesday's TSU
chapter meeting.
The meeting begins at 3 p.m. in
the AG Auditorium. Committee
findings will' be turned', over to
TACT's Committee of I Faculty
Development ; to support TACT
arguments for higher pay increases
for faculty members in the future,
said Harvey R. Cover.
Gover said TACT needs strong
support from all TSU faculty
members. TACT is the only
organized voice representing
teaching faculty in higher
education in the legislature, he
said.
. Frank Wright, TACT executive
director, is actively pursuing
TACT's goals in Austin, he said,
Wright argues for beneficial
proposals and against those TACT
sees as harmful to higher
education.
Because "higher education has
fared badly in recent years,"
Gover said, "Wright's position in
Austin needs to be strengthened.
One way is to increase active -
membership in local chapters." ,
"TACT can be no stronger
than its individual members,"
Cover said, "Tarleton has an

An electronic scanner for

Henry Vissotzky,-director of
the Instructional Media Center,
said the scanner, known as a

unusually influential role, on the
state level with one faculty
member serving as chairman of a
state committee and two others
serving as members of state
committees."
One issue before TACT this
year is that of affiliation with one
or more national educational
association. Proponents of
affiliation would make TACT a
stronger lobby in Austin and
could include collective
bargaining.
. Gover said smaller schools like
TSU suffer when the legislature
fails to provide proper support to
higher education. ■
In addition,, the formula
system of the Texas College and
University Coordinating Board
tends to work against TSU, Gover
said. The formula system is being
reviewed this year and smaller
schools can let their judgments of
it be known, he said.
