Tarleton has trouble getting books
by Bobbie Covington
John E. Miller, manager of the
Tarleton campus store, said he has
experienced more trouble getting
book orders filled this year than in
any previous one.
The most recent example is the
$6.25 freshman English text, "Mass
Media and Mass Man" by Alan Casty,
published by Holt, Rinehart and
Winston, Inc. of Chicago.
The book became available at the
end of the third week of the
semester. This forced students into
11 Monday, Wednesday, Friday or
seven Tuesday, Thursday class
meetings without a text.
The book is used by
approximately 600 students. Miller
said the store had about 60 books on
hand at the start of the semester.
The order for "Mass Media and
Mass Man" was included on Nov. 22
with 14 other titles in a consolidated
order to Follett, the biggest book
wholesaler in the country, Miller
said. Follett, as is its custom, shipped
all the used copies it had on hand, a
total of 15 copies. These books and
the other 14 titles arrived on
Dec. 23. ••
Miller said he received
notification from Follett that the
text was out of stock, and that he
would receive word from the
publisher on a delivery date.
When he heard no more, Miller
called the publisher's Customer,
Service Department to ask about his
order on Jan. 11. They promised to
check and call him txack
immediately. Two days later, they
called back to say that the order had
been shipped from Chicago that
morning.
Miller said, he waited a week,
expecting the"-order to arrive, then
again ■ called Holt, Rinehart and
Winston. They , said they ? regretted
their error and were rounding up. the
books via computer from "other
shipping points.
On Jan, 27 Miller called again and
was told that the books were on the
way. They arrived in two shipments.
The first, containing 365 books, was
received Feb. 7. Another 152 books
came in Feb. 10.
"Mass Media and Mass Man" cost
$5.25 liist semester. It is $5,95 plus
tax now for a total of $6.25.
The foulups and delays are not
unusual, Miller said. It happens
often, but this book involved more
students than most.
One of the ways book store
managers are coping with the
problem, Miller said, is to trade
books. , j

STUDENT NEWSPAPER
TARLETON STATE UNIVERSITY
151 teachers get slots;
2nd largest number yet
by Lisa Lloyd
, The second largest number of
student teachers in Tarleton's
history-151 -will be working in public
•schools this semester.
Dr. Joe Cummings, director of
student teaching, said the student
teachers are divided into two blocks
each semester. Dr. Cummings said
that ,25 are teaching in the first
block, which will end on March 7.
The second block will begin on
March 10 in area schools holding
contracts with Tarleton for the
student teachers.
Dr. Cummings said that, in the
past there has been some confusion
about how the schools hosting the
student teachers were selected.
According to U.S. Senate Bill 8, a
school may request student teachers
to be provided by a college, if the
public school, holds a contract
agreeable to both institutions.
Schools selected are generally
within driving distance of
Stephenville and in an area
convenient for the student teachers
and their advisers, Dr. Cummings
said. Continued on page 7
