Safety Consideration
In Mascot Question
For those of you who missed "Oscar Pow" the cannon or the
Tarleton "Texan" and his horse and for those of you who didn't
Saturday night, here is what happened.
Last year was Tarleton's first year in the Lone Star Conference.
Prior to TSC's entering the conference, the Lone Star Conference
board had outlawed the use of cannons and other fireworks at con-
ference ballgames because of possible injuries to spectators and
players.
The cannon was visible at games last year only because no com-
plaint was registered. After a complaint was registered, Tarleton was
asked to comply with the ruling. The conference rule, prohibiting
cannons and fireworks arose to avoid the possibility of a cannon ex-
ploding at a game. This has, in fact, happened in the past on other
campuses where cannons were used, causing injuries to nearby
students.
Although there is presently no conference rule against Five ani-
mals at ballgames, the subject is scheduled for consideration at the
next meeting of the Lone Star Conference board. Again, a possible
safety hazard is involved in the use of live animals around crowds of
people. Horses, for example, excited by the strange surroundings
can throw their riders or bolt into a crowd of spectators.
The problem of the Tarleton mascots will be presented to the
Student Advisory Committee which is expected to meet this week .
Any proposals arising from the Student Advisory Committee will
then be brought before the Student Senate executive committee for
presentation to the entire Student Senate body. The final step for
any proposal forthcoming would be the TSC Athletic Board.
The cannon and "Texan" have long been a part of TSC spirit.
Certainly there can be some way tor these traditions to continue and
yet ensure safety for students and visitors at ballgames. Perhaps a
replacement for "Oscar Pow" could be a large drum, similar to the
one at the University of Texas at Austin. This would certainly be
less dangerous than the cannon and probably not in violation oi
conference rules. The problem of who would play the drum could,
perhaps, be worked out between the spirit organizations on campus.
As for the "Texan," the horse seems to present the main danger.
If this is true, surely a compromise can be reached. The Stephen F.
Austin "Lumberjacks" were forced to give a little in the use ot their
mascot. The tall lumberjack, who used to carry an authentic double -
edged ax, now carries an "authentic" replica of wood and paint.
School mascots, which are, in reality, students dressed as animals,
are "okay" in the conference rules. Tarleton's answer may be a
horseless Texan, complete in western gear-maybe even with a sad-
dle slung over his back. This way, at least, there would be little dan-'
ger to anyone.
Above all, we feel that the student body should have a chance to
make its wishes known. If you have an opinion on the mascots
which you would like to express, send it in the form of a "letter to
the editor" to the J-Tac office or put it in the "Hotline" box in the
Tarleton Center. Even if your letter is not printed, we will see that
all letters and ideas are turned over to the Student Advisory Com-
mittee for their consideration.
