Texans Axe Lumberjacks, Prepare For ETSU
by J. Louis Evans,
Sports Information Director
The weather was cold,
but the Texans were hot
and the young charges, of
Coach Loyd Taylor romped
to their first Lone Star Con-
ference win of the year
downing Stephen F. Austin
State University 21-13 at
TSC's Memorial Field
Saturday night.
Tarleton's tossing Dan
Garrett threw for two touch-
downs and ran for the third
in blustery 40 degree
weather before 750 hearty
fans.
SFA won the tbss and
took advantage of the 30-
mile per hour wind kicking
off to the Texans. Coming
out in the shotgun formation,
but running from a short
snap Eddie Douglas picked
up 11 yards on the first
play of the game and the
Texans were on their way
to a touchdown in the open-
ing series of the game.
Douglas picked up an ed-
ditional five on the next
down, a Garrett to Mike
Neill pass went incomplete
into the strong north wind,
and Garrett then kept for
four yards to the SFA 32.
It was then bombs
away, with Garrett hitting
Watson Wright for a 32 yard
pass-run and the Texans
were out front 6-0. Paul
Cotton kicked the first of
three conversions and the
Texans were never headed.
After two exchanges,
the Texans started a series
of downs that went from their
own two the SFA 19 in 20
plays to eat up most of the
first qaurter. Facing fourth
and 10 at the Lumberjack
19, Garrett fumbled and
SF A recovered at the 'Jacks
10 yard line.
/ The Lumberjacks
picked up two first downs
to polish off the first 15
minutes of play and the
teams changed ends with
the Texans leading 7-0.
Kicking into the wind
after three plays of the
second quarter, SFA's
Cecil Newton got off only
a nine yarder and the Tex-
ans were back in business
on the Lumberjack 35.
Garrett hit Chip Davis for
17 and a first down, then
found Mike Neill all alone
in the end zone for an 18
yard TD pass. Cotton ran
the Texan total to 14-0
with a perfect extra point.
The two teams see-
sawed for the remainder of
the second quarter_ with
