Tarieton Students, Faculty Endorse Draft Lottery
The draft lottery has
made a comeback in the
theatre of American politics.
President Nixon, in his own
comeback, stated that he
wished to initiate a volunteer
army and that a draft lot-
tery wquld be the first act in
his great production.
In reviewing Nixon's
latest chapter in his draft
reform program, several Tar-
leton students and faculty
were interviewed concerning
the lottery. They made the
following coments:
Bernard A. Slegal, sen-
ior biology major from San
Antonio: My own opinion of
the new draft lottery is that
it seems to be in t.ie right
direction of calling the men
needed for the armed ser-
vices. 1 believe,,though, that
if the Army were changed so
that the base pay were
raised, and several other re-
forms done that a volunteer
army would be sufficient.
Also, I think tnat a person

who serves VISTA should be
draft-sexempt. My number is
93, which seems likely-to be
called, and, if it is, Twill
serve my time. That's the
luck or risk in a lottery.
Richard Wolfe, senior
chemistry major from Blan-
ket: It seems that the num-
ber of people who think that
the lottery is a good thing
is directly proportional' to
the number of people who got
large numbers. Personally, I
don't think it changes things
that much. Hmm—maybe a
little for the better; I'm 198.
Jim Payne, sophomore
history major from. Dallas: I
I like it and feel that it's fair.
. This is the best system for
;the draft. We should have
! had this long ago because it
- allows people to plan their
' lives without worrying about
!the draft.
Martha May, freshman
.elementary education major
' from Sweetwater: I think it's
ffair. It is more to date with
■ our time. The boys only
I nave to worry about the draft
■i one year. Boys can make
■ their plans, especially if the
) Se lective Service decides to
| draw the dates durin'g the
|summer,before school begins.
; Jeff Lawrence, sopho-
more pre-law major from
fEuless: This new draft law
(is the best new program so
•far initiated by, President
Nixon. It is by far the fairest
draft system for the United
States. Of course, thefe are
still a few inequities in it,
but it is coming closer to
being perfect than the last
system. My number is 349.
However, I was behind this
lottery a long time ago and I
sweated it out just like
everybody else.
Adrian Cody, freshman
math major from Dallas: It's
a fair deal. I'm number 21 on
the list, but I think it's the
best way, because this is
the first step toward Mr. Nix-
on's professional army.
Everybody had an equal
chance. I was one of the un-
lucky ones, but I don't mind
- because there was the same
chance I would be picked
later.
Brenda Williams, sopho-
more English major from
Odessq: > A good deal. It's
fair. It allows people to plan
their lives around the fact
that they're getting drafted.
People don't have to live in
terror of the draft. The main
thing I. like is that it is a
step toward a volunteer army.
If we have to have an army at
all, voluntary participation
is the only way to have it.
Vance Rollins, faculty
member from the Social Sci-
ence Department: It's an im-
provement over the old draft
system. It shortens the time
for uncertainty. It still isn't
fair. The government still
will have to do a great deal
to come up with a fair sys-
tem. I hop£ this isn't the end
of improvement. It is a half-
way measure and is a stop-
gap to quick improvement.
Or. James Bachman,
Associate Professor of So-
cial Sciences: This system
will be more acceptable than
the last one. It puts selec-
tion purely in the realm of
chance. Thus, no group can
be criticized for selection.
It is a reprieve from destiny.
Dr. O.A. Grant, Head of
the Social Science Depart-
ment: I like it fine. It is
much fairer. It's funnv to
note that the Greeks used to
chose their office-holders
by lottery. The men now
know where they stand.
Mrs. Louise StalHngs,
Instructor of English: I hope
it will relieve sbme anxie-
ties. Anything is better than
the way things have been
the past four years. Tne in-
equities of the old system
were painfully obvious and I
hqpe this program will work
better.
Tarletonites have over-
whelmingly endorsed the^-
draft lottery. 'It's fair-trite
but true' is the general opin-
ion. Curiously, many stu-
dents are in favor of a vol-
unteer army, wnile none of
the faculty members did favor
such a system. Nixon's pro-
gram for draft reform is,
according to TSC'ers, the
most popular of his programs.
