now a member of a professional
entertainment group at Arling-
ton's amusement center, Six
Flags Over Texas.
The reason is simple. Roy
tried.
How?
"Well, the director of the
Tarleton Singers said anyone in-
terested in possibly getting a
summer job as a performer
should attend the audition at
Arlington." Roy said, "I was
rather dubious," and,, when we
arrived there it looked pretty
bad. We were the 169th group,
or something like that, to audi-
tion, It ws ten in the morning
when. we got there and by the
time we started auditioning it
was about four thirty in the
afternoon."
"Anxiety had built up and I
didn't think we did very well
as a whole. The auditionor ask-
ed me to sing "America", so I
sang the first verse. When it
came time for Ihe second verse
it oecured to me that I had for-
gotten it. 1 know it seemed aw-
fully unpatriotic at the time
but, . . J sort of improvised.
I sang it twice rnd both verses
were different". He laughed,

and kept trying. This time it
paid off,
"Anyway," he went on, "I
was the only one selected out
of our group. I really thought 1
had failed, but 1 guess some-
body didn't think so."
Roy began as a performer
while in grade school. "I played
the part of a bear in my first
speaking role," he grinned, "I
just sort of gestured most of
the time though."
"Then in high school I played

the part of a villain. I did better
than the bear, although I didn't
think so at the time. But I
somehow managed to get the
"Actor of the Year award for
my efforts."
Roy continued his passion for-1"
- performing while in the Air
Force. He tried to participate
in as much "theater" as he„
could. He auditioned for any
part available. He failed a few
times, but he kept' plugging
away.
Next he attended Tarleton af-
ter his discharge from the serv-
ice and became a member of
the "Players." He did his best,
Roy also sang with the Tarle-
ton Singers, .He tried. in every
way to improve himself as a
performer.
Now in his graduating year at
Tarleton with a record of fine
performances behind him, he
tries even harder and now gets"
paid for his skills.
The type of work he does' is
purely entertaining, he. said.
There is no deept hidden mean-
ing in it. The audience at "Six
Flags Over Texas" wants to en-
joy without needing to be in-
tellectual.
Roy's particular part in the
song. In order to keep the show
"peppy" everyone gets a
chance at a different part dur-*
ing its summer showing. He is,
as he put it, "a song and dance
man."
The show being rehearsed is
entitled, "Red, White and Blue
Revue" and d?als with origin
of American songs. One of the
cast members explains the ori-
gin, after which the cast sings
a medley. Opening night is"
April 1,'
Is ;Roy happy?
"Oh yes, yes," he smiled,
"very happy."
Sometime it pays to be
"corny" — to be what you
dream. Sometimes it pays to
try.
