4—THE J-TAC
Tuesday, February 14, 1950
By Charles Dunn
The Tyler Apaches are recognized as the best basketball team
in junior college circles throughout the nation. That is why yours
truly wasn't too disappointed when the Plowboys received a defeat at
the hands of said team. Your reporter recalled that recently the
Apaches visited the state of Washington and there defeated some of
the top teams in the nation by as many if not more pointsthan they
defeated the Plowboys, Your reporter also recalled that the Apaches
were made up of one Ail-American player and two probables.
At the last Jiome game, one of the officials, noticing the empty
stands, remarked, "Where are all the Tarleton fans? They didn't come
cut tonight. Is this dead week or something?" He waa informed that
it was not dead week, that the fans just "don't seem to turn out as
they once did." This confession was quite embarrassing to the member
of the faculty who made it, especially since there was no apparent rea-
son why a much larger portion of the student body shouldn't attend
the home games. Do you want this to happen again. Be at every game
you can possibly attend and show that Tarleton has plenty, of school
spirit.

Real honest effort characterizes all of Pence Dacus' play. Dacus
proved this each time he enters a game. He is always oh the starting
line-up and is high scorer for the Plowboys in action now. He always
shines in defensive and offensive play, rendering a smooth perform-
ance when handling the ball. This mainstay for the Tarleton team
comes from Brady, where he has an experienced background in bas-
ketball.
Staying on the road for any length of time takes stamina. An ex-
tended trip is hard and exhausting. The Plowboy basketballers will
finish just such a trip tomorrow. They left Tarleton Thursday, went
to Beaumont where they played the Lamar Cardinals Friday' and
Saturday, then journeyed to Kilgore and played the Rangers yester-
day, and will be in Tyler for an engagement with the Apaches to-
night.
The Paris basketball team, one of the few teams to hold the Tyler
Apaches to a four point lead, will be on the combat list here at Tarle-
ton Saturday. The Dragons have made outstanding showing at all
their games this season and will definitely be tough competition for
the Plowboys. A victory over the Dragons will help the Plowboys'
average quite a bit. Do your part to insure a Plowboy victory. Be at
the game Saturday night.
The biggest iskue in intramurals right now is the organization of
a Softball league. This league will probably go into operation in the
immediate future as soon as the weather clears up. Gossip has it
that the campus is loaded with Softball aspirants, and this is their
opportunity to make themselves known in this famous American sport.
Another item in intramurals is the current drawing up of a volley-
ball schedule.
Flory Re-Schedules
Volleyball Games
The Intramural volleyball season begfan last night under a new
schedule and arrangement. All games previously played were can-
celled and the two league system was merged into a single league with
ten teams, 1 ;j
Four teams were merged into two in order to make the ten team
league possible. The two Band teams became one and the Green Wave
joined forces with the Gophers.'
The rules have remained the same that governed the previous teams.
The managers must have their team ready to play , at the designated
time-and two forfeits will eliminate any team from further competition.
Three games will be played each week night. The first ganle will be-
gin at 6 p.m.; the second at 6:40 p.m.; and the third at 7:10 p.m.
A completely new schedule has been drawn up and all old schedules
should be discarded.
The teams entered in the new volleyball league are as follows:

Apaches Ambush
Plowboys 48-26
The Tarleton Plowboys were de-
feated 48-26 in their first basket-
ball encounter of the season with
the power packed Tyler Apaches
Tuesday night in the Tarleton
gym.
The Tarleton offensive during
the first of the game was a slow
and deliberate affair. The Plow-
boys gained possession of the ball
at the beginning jump and began
a cautious approach to the basket.
Several moments passed before
ancy found an opening and racked
up the first two points of the game.
Fouls on the part of the Apaches
enabled the Plowboys to add more
points to this field goal and gain
a brief lead which was ended as
the Apaches tied the score 5-5.
Led by their high point man, Royce
Ray, the Apaches then rendered a
stifling scoring campaign and were
ahead 19-9 at half-time.
The second half belonged to the
A'p a c h es. Fast ball handling,
smooth teamwork, and a dead eye
for the basket enabled last year's
national junior college champs to
run off with the score.
The Box Score:
