Dr. Grant Receives Award
For Outstanding Teaching
Dr. 0. A. Grant, Professor of
Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation
Social Sciences, has been named
a 1963 Piper Professor by the
of San Antonio, The announce-
ment was released yesterday by
Mr. Michael J. Balint, Admini-
strative Assistant of the Founda-
tion. Dr. Grant is one of the ten
college and university professors
selected by the foundation this
year and the first Tarleton State
College' professor to be so honor-
ed.
The award of Piper Professor
carries with it not only a mone-
tary honorarium but recognition
of excellence and superior ability
in education. The selection com-
mittee bases its choices on the
individuals devotion to his profes-
sion, his out-going- nature, and his
all-around capabilities as ;a pro-
fessor and as a person.
Decision Justified
"Extremely pleased and honor-
ed to have been chosen a Piper
Professor," was Dr. Grant's re-
action to the announcement. He
stated that he thought this award
justified a decision made on a de-
sert island during World War II
when he changed his mind about
his original goal of a career in
law and decided instead that when
the war ended he would go into
the teaching profession. A decis-
ion that he (and his students)

have never regreted.
The former U. S. Navy combat
pilot doesn't feel that teaching is
dull. In fact he thinks, "it is the
most exciting- thing- in the world
and a terrible, terrible, terrible
responsibility." This attitude and
an inherent ability to interrupt a
discussion of the philosophies of
Locke and Machevelli to listen to a
student recite an Indian version
of the 23rd Psalm and marvel at
its beauty are among the many
reasons Dr. Grant was a selection
of the Piper Foundation for 1963.
" Commenting on his selection,
Dr. Dick Smith, Head of the De-
partment of Social Science, stated
that the award was richly deserv-
ed by Dr. Grant. Dr. Smith can
feel justifiably proud of his in-
sistence, back in 1948, that his
old friend from Breckenridge
come to Tarleton to poin him in
teaching- the social sciences.
Tarleton President E. J. Howell
stated, "The college takes justifi-
able pride in congratulating Dr.
Grant in receiving the distinct
honor of the Piper Foundation
Professor of the Year."
Selected Tarleton
Selection of Tarleton by Dr.
Grant was no accident. After re-
ceiving his undergraduate degree
from Hardin Simmons in 1939,
surviving WWII as a naval aviator
and receiving his Ph. D. from
Georgetown University in 1948, he
was seeking "one year" in his fav-
ored Southwest where he could
"try his skills" in the classrooms
of an institution with high acade-
mic standards and relax in the
stmosphere of a small community
and familiar surroundings. Ac-
cepting the urgings of Dr. Smith
that "try" Tarleton, Grant brought
his wife Betty and small son to
Stephenville. And, by his own ad-
mission, he found exactly what he
was looking for, "For work," says
Grant, "Tarleton is the idea place."
"I don't plan to write any text-
books, publish any learned papers
or otherwise distinguish myself
as a research man. I'm a teacher.
I might publish something on
flowers someday — gardening is
my hobby and no one has ever
written an adequate book on
plants in this area. Otherwise I
intend to stay right here and reach
a distinguished old age."
"Stay right here" is not an apt
term for 'Dr. Grant's range of
activities however. He has taken
students on two tours of Europe—
in 1900 and 1962 — and he hopes

Dr. Grant summarized his
career thus far by commenting
that it was a long trip from a de-

Professor, but that it was a
worthwhile one.
