Coach Oscar Frazier Is Math Professor,
Pilot, Marksman, Farmer, and Athlete
By JIM HONEYCUTT
O. II; Frazier, associate profes-
sor of mathematics at Tarleton
State College is a man. who has
done many .things in his life and
has done them well.
The genial math professor,
track coach, rifleman, farmer, live-
stock judger, and ex-army officer,
has combined so many varied ac-
tivities during his lifetime that
one is at loss to pick -out a single
interest that dominates his life.
A&M Graduate
A graduate of Texas A&M
where he lettered in track for
four years, he is at present track
coach for Tarleton State College.
He has often been called over-
optimistic by trackmen. X
Frazier says young trackmen
underestimate their potential.
Perhaps this is due to modesty,
but certainly one will never know
how fast he. can run or how high
he can jump until he gives it a
try. He remembers one man who
didn't come out for the track
team because he didn't think he
was good enough. Coach Frazier
urged him to come out anyway.
"The fellow ended up high-jump-
ing G feet 6 inches in his second
year," Frazier said. There are. at
present 36 potential winners on

Band Tour
Tarleton Tophatters - will leave
March 10 on a five day tour of
South Texas.
Jazz concerts, will be played , at
Houston,- Galveston, Pasadena, and
La Marque. .
this year's, track team, according
to the coach, proof of his optimism,
promising Track Team
lie- bases his statement on past
experience and Tarleton has many
trophies to support his opinions.
He reports that this year's team
shows promise of being outstand-
ing. They look very good in prac-
tice des'pite adverse weather, lim-
inting workouts, he said.
Four men, Jack Pettit of Co-
manche, Harry Earls of Lorena,
Tom Schafer of Killeen, and El-
liot Mattlage are returning lct-
termen. Others have shown.con-
sistent improvement and potential-
ity since training began, he con-
tinued.
Various Training Methods
, Coach Frazier has his own opin-
ions of training methods, past and
present, and the qualifications of
a trackman. "The dash man must;
be a 'natural,' that is, he must
have considerable natural speed.
Of course, the best of natural
ability must be developed by train-
ing and.competition," he said. He
remembers Carlton Terry, who ran
the hundred yard dash in an un-
official 9.2: as a man with great
natural speed. In other track
events, shortcomings can be large-
ly remedied by training and condi-.
tioning, he believes. He lias never
found a substiute for running for
the man who is-trying to '*get in
shape."
