cr The Season Q
Port Arthur High vs. Orange
HE season started with a great victory for us. The first opponents were the
two Orange teams, who met us on our grounds. The girls played their game
first and defeated the Orange girls by a score of 25 to 11. At no time did the
Orange girls have the lead. The team work of the Port Arthur girls was without
a flaw. The guards of Port Arthur did not give the Orange girls a chance to try
to throw but a very few goals, while the centers kept the ball in Port Arthur's terri-
tory most of the time.
The boy's game followed this victory and added more glory to the day. Port
Arthur scored in the very first of the game and continued to score on throughout the
game. The final score was Port Arthur 33 and Orange 14. In every way the work
of the Port Arthur team was far superior to the work of the Orange boys. Sandefur
of P. A. needs special mention for the manner in which he carried the ball down the
field, as well as dropping it into the basket. Mayer of P. A. did excellent work, he
being especially swift of foot and of hand. James of P. A. could out jump his
opponent without the least exertion. Dowell guarded the Orange goal with the eye
of an eagle. Shirley of Beaumont acted as referee and Hurley of Port Arthur acted
as umpire.
Port Arthur High vs. Beaumont High
The Beaumont game was somewhat closer than the Orange game but the Port
Arthur boys came off with flying colors and a good lead. Beaumont started the
game by scoring. At the beginning of the game it looked as if Beaumont had the
game as they started off with such speed. But they lost that pace in a short time
and the Port Arthur boys obtained a lead of one point before the first half was over.
In the second half Port Arthur came strong and this half ended with a score of 18 to
13 in favor of Port Arthur. The team work of the Port Arthur boys was excellent,
while the Beaumont boys did not show any team work worth speaking about. Kelly
of Beaumont did excellent work as a guard, while Sandefur came up with him in the
same work for Port Arthur. Dr. C. M. Hurley of Port Arthur acted as referee and
Mr. Cutting of the Port Arthur College acted as umpire.
Port Arthur vs. Sour Lake
The boys and girls went to Sour Lake with the intention of playing, but on
account of rain the girls did not play. The boys did not mind the rain and played
while it poured down. There were not any features of basketball displayed as the
game was played in from six to eight inches of water. Jordan played center for Port
Arthur throughout the game. Although the day was disagreeable there was a good
crowd out to see the game. The score at the end of the game was 13 to 12 in favor
of Port Arthur High.
Port Arthur vs. Beaumont High
When Port Arthur left for Beaumont she went with the strong determination of
showiiing Beaumont that she could win with a larger score on Beaumont's grounds than
she did on her own grounds. Beaumont was just as determined that she was going to
