While American and allied troops are
waging war against the Bolsheviki on
the northern front another war is
continually going- on in Archangel
the war against Bolshevik spies and
agents. Nearly all the trouble that has
occurred in Archangel in the way of
strikes and hesitating morale on the
part of some of the new Russian con-
script troops can be traced to these
agents in the first place when the
allies occupied Archangel it was ab-
solutely Impracticable to search out
among the civilian population all the
wnuvi&i wno remained oemna.
Many of the Bolshevik soldiers
whom our forces captured at the
iron including many who said they
were forced to serve with the Bol-
sheviki despite their objections vol-
unteered and were accepted in
Archangel into the new Russian bat-
talions formed here to fight with the
allies. Some of these men were sin-
cere volunteers and are doing splen-
did work at the front A few others.'

with a circumference of Just a mile
and a quarter In the center of San
Francisco bay. The United States
army has 47 military prisoners prac
tically all of whom have been sen-
tenced since war was declared with
Germany. Former soldiers sentenced
by military courts for serious crimes
are here. There are boys who volun-
teered early in the war and then did
not get to fight because they violated
the rules and regulations of an army.
Every class of civilian life also has
its representatives here according to
the prison's books.
Officially the prison area is called
the "Pacific branch United States dis-
ciplinary barracks. Alcatraz Island."
To it are sent soldiers from western
stations and posts after convictions
under military law.
