THE GALLEON
Child of the Snap Factory
Mona Faye Roberts
A child so small and weary;
A child of the factory there.
No sun, no birds, no flowers-
Only the stuffy air.
Only the vile thing 'round her
As her fingers move about,
Moving the bits of metal,
Placing snap in snap.
Card after card they come in;
Card after card to sort-
The sparkle of snaps, her sunshine;
The carding of snaps, her art.
Why should she have a playtime
Who doesn't know how to play?
Only a long, lbng work time,
Gaining so little pay.
Gaining a weakened body,
Killing the soul, perhaps,
Merely a child of labor,
Carding the metal snaps.----- ------------------------,------------ --- ---- ---------
