COMMITTEE ON
BONUS IS OUT
FIRST WORK IN EFFORT TO RAISE
$75000 IN 30 DAYS IS
STARTED
I leaded l»y J. .1. Harden a committee of
seven Brownsville bu* mess men today be-
gan a round of tin* business houses in their
efforts to raise a bonus of >7.'>.imiu which
mu t be raised within thirty days to secure
the electrification of the Brownsville street
railways the standardization and electri-
fication of flic railroad from Brown .die
to Point Isabel a distance of twentv-two
miles the building of a new wharf at the
Point and the construction of a new chan
ncl troin the west side of the bar m Brazos
Santiago pa-s to the wharf a distance of
about three miles.
M« mbei> of the committee are confident
that there will be no ditlieulty in raising
tlu* amount required and exjieet to com.
jdete it within the next two weeks or even
in shorter time. Two years ago a bonus
>f over $100000 was raised in compara-
tively short time notes being given which
matured in one year provided certain im-
provements were undertaken in a given
time. However the Kuro.|H*an war and
other events made capital tight and it was
decided to postpone the proposed improve-
ment-. The Browne interests owners of
the street railroad and line to Point Isabel
!eel now that the time lias arrived and
agree to begin construction of the improve-
ments within thirty days after the required
bonus has been raised.
The committee today reports that the re-
sponses to it- iutial effort- has been very
good.
