(Continued from page 2)
since it would quickly victimize not only the
institutions but the people they serve. Allowing
the bureau to close the institutions brings
immediate hardship to the Medicare patients
themselves, depriving them of their own freedom
of choice.
So programs of organized community protest
are indicated...programs that must involve large
numbers of citizens who are willing to write
letters, cast ballots, speak up in protest, and bring
all possible political pressures to bear on elected
representatives at the appropriate levels of
government to correct and corrall the runaway
bureaucracy.
However it is done, it urgently needs to be done
if we are to protect and preserve the
Constitutional freedoms which our forefathers
won for us at great cost two hundred years ago.
Some personal sacrifices in the name of freedom
are still necessary if freedom is to be preserv-
ed...and will always be necessary.
Henry David Thoreau put it this way: "I think
that we should be men first, and subjects after-
ward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for
the law, so much as for the right."
Spur of the Moment
(Continued from page 2)
When it comes to "living beyond our means", no institution we can
think of is more adept at it than the United States Postal Service,
which doesn't seem to skimp on the luxuries (like catering to stamp
collectors...a hobby which currently has Postmaster General Bailar
under FBI and Congressional investigation of charges for some
traded $7 million worth of lucrative postal contracts for some
cut-rate rare stamps for his personal collection) but can't seem to
manage the necessities (like providing daily mail service to the
nation).
This "comic strip" is to be provided free of charge to newspapers
on a weekly basis, beginning in September...at Postal Service
expense, which means your expense, in case you're confused. Isn't
that ducky?
We're going to deprive ourselves [and our readers] of the luxury
of viewing "Stan Stamp" each week, in favor of what we consider
the necessity of covering the news of this community in these
columns. This newspaper can't afford the space "Stan" would take
up, and the editors of this newspaper seriously doubt that the U.S.
Postal Service can afford the expense of mailing "Stan" to us each
week...not until Mr. Bailar comes up with some other solution to his
monumental deficit than soaking us for ever-higher postage,
anyway.
