Writer favors military
spending for defense
LETTERS
totkdilffi-
Dear Mr. Editor:
In your March 6,1975 edition
of The Canadian Record,
Opinion Page, Topic "Looking
at Priorities":
Your opinion was that the
reduction of military spending
should be cut by 10-20%. I
have been associated with the
military service for twelve
years, and may be prejudiced,
but would like to state some
facts in behalf of the military. I
am now a member of the Active
Rampvpc
In World War II and the
Korean War, 80% of the
fighting and military duties
were carried out by Reserve
personnel.
The United States was, and
enjoyed being, Number One
Power for several years, but we
are no longer Number One,
barely Number Two and by
September 1, 1975, could
possibly be Number Three or
Four.
There has already begun a
Ganatlian rec ord
large reduction in Reserve and
Ready forces. The Navy
Seabees, as of 1 July 1975, will
be cut from 17 Battalions to
eight, and from eight regiments
to four, or around 5,000 to 7,000
men. I know of other
reductions, but do not know the
size and number.
In this time of inflation and
high cost of living it should be
recognized that this number of
men draw monthly government
checks that will average $70 a
month, which will be stopped as
of 1 July.
In this time of fuel shortage,
food shortages and large
national debts, we could be
getting in a position that a
greater power may try to come
in and dominate the American
people.
I do not like the Comunists,
and do not believe in inviting
them here. Our forces should be
so maintained as to discourage
it.
I remain respectfully yours,
FLOYD SKIPPER
