PAID IN FULL
John owed Fred $209 which
he had borrowed several years
back. John had been having a
hard time and owed many bills.
Beoause of his situation, he
thought Fred might accept less
than $200 as payment in full.
He sent Fred a check for $125
marked "In full for balance due
of loan" on the face of the
check. Fred cashed the check
and started action to recover
the other $79. Can he collect?
Yes, he can, as a promise or

popular a subject.
Stuart Russell of Holyoke,
Mass., has evidently read a
book along these lines. In a
recent speech to industrial dis-
tributors at the Edgewater Gulf
Hotel, Mr. Russell told how both
the African badger and a small
bird called the honey bird
work together. Both like honey
is the run- but neither can secure it alone,
community. So, the bird scouts the country
' to find the hive and then leads
the badger to it They then
enjoy the honey together.
Have you seen any African
pictures lately? If so, you
probably noticed a white bird
riding on the back of. a hippo-
potamus. They do it to guide
the big fellows to and away
from the water. The hippos
cannot see the water wry well
vnd have few senses for find-
ng it. Just how well the bird
<mes out to advantage is
clear.
Then RusseU tells of an ai- ^ to
which
liance between the crocodile
and the courser, a small plover-
like bird; After feeding, the
crocodile opens its mouth and
,the little bird pops in and out
to pick the monster's teeth.
Thus, a meal is exchanged for
a service.

According to Bureau of Labor
Statistics records, it looks Hike
the old and obviously good idea
of paying people according to
their experinece, skiil and pro-
ductive ability, is back
in style. The idea of economic
leveling, which started in the
New Deal days, resulted in pay
raises on a cents-per-hour
basis across the board. This
benefitted the lower paid, less
skilled workers much more
than the experienced and ca-
pable people in higher wage
brackets and tended to draw
the two ends of the wage scale
not i together
| In 1950 we began to get bark
on the track, as the trend shift-
percentage wage raises
result in the increase
being a proportion of current
income, instead of an arbitrary
doilar-and-cents figure. This is
good news for America and
everybody in - It. People hsrve
different capabilities and you
cant change that, so the best
thing taf do is recognize , and
take advantage of it.'
Our country was built on
the idea of maintaining as much
equality of opportunity as is
humanlyj possible. The alien
and destructive idea of equality
of economic status should be
buried deep and forgotten. It
could - build nothing but na-
tional mediocrity.^, •
agreement is unenforceable un-
less supported by consideration
or by giving of value by the
other, party. John did not give
Fred anything he was not ob-
ligated to give and hence there
was nothing to bind any agree-
ment to accept the $125 as pay
ment in full.
However, there are two varia-
tions of this situation in which
John could ascomplish his re-
sult!
First, if there was an' honest
dispute concerning the balance
due on the loan, much as a dis-
