Today In History
Today is Sunday, May 28th, the
148th day of 1961. There are 217
days left in the year.
Today's highlight in history:
On this day in 1754, the first blood
of the French and Indian War was
shed with the battle of Great Mea-
dow, Pennsylvania. For George
Washington, who was 22 years old
at the time, it was his first military
command.
On this date
In 1586, Sir Francis Drake at-
tacked and destroyed the Spanish
Fort at St. Augustine, Florida.
In 1798, Congress authorized a
provisional Army and empowered
the president to order seizure of
French Army vessels attacking U.
S. Merchantmen.
In 1845, a fire ip Quebec, Canada,
destroyed 1,650 houses.
In 1934, the Dionne quintuplets
were born at Callender, Ontario.
In 1958, Two Presbyterian de-
nominations merged into the 3
million-member United Presbyter-
ian Church in the United States ox
America.
Ten years ago, Soviet-UN dele-
gate Jacob Malik declared in
New York that reports of Korean
peace feelers by Russia were
"completely groundless."
Five years ago, Pittsburgh Pir-
ate first baseman Dale Long boast-
ed a major league record by hitt-
ing a home run in 8 straight games.
One year ago, an estimated 200
persons were killed when a tropi-
cal storm hit Luzon in the Phili-
ppine Islands.
Today's Birthdays:
President John C. Warner of Car-
negie Tech is 64 years old. In base-
ball. National League President
Warren Giles is 65.
Thought for today:
Above all other things is justice;
success is a good thing: wealth is
good also; honor is better: but
justice excels them all — David
Dudley Field.
