ABILENE 'Spl' — Two new
wines .->t West Texas Rehabilitation
Center were dedicated here Sunday
afternoon with Mrs. Ivy Baker
Priest, principal speaker, calling
the center "a ereat undertaking."
"I salute you in this great un-
dertaking." the former treasurer
of the Unitf.l States told a capacity
audience, "and wish you well and
s.iv God bless you in your future
efforts."
Mrs. Priest, chairman of the
1957 Easter Seal Camnaign and
active in national crippled child-
ren and adult work, said that the
West Texas group nad erected "a
mcnument that will endure for-
ever." a place where chiYIren can
be made whole.
She pointed out that the Ameri-
can wav of life and svstem made
the Abilene and West Texas center
possible to aid crippled children.
The speaker praised the spirit and
determination of those who have
aided in the four .ling of the center,
and added, "the center will grow
and continue to serve where need-
ed."
Speaking of crippling diseases,
s'ne said neither wealth or geo-
graphy or race prevented the
scourge.
Aiding cripolt.1 children is a
"big order." she said and the road
to physical recovery is necessarily
slow. "Success is the ultimate goal
of these children." she said, and
cut her spech sho>*t because of a
Ancient Atoms
Of Pollen Have
Abundant Energy
NEW YORK i Spl'—Ancient at-
oms of pollen, which brought only
the misery of hay fever to the
caveman, are helping to provide
modern man with a source of
abundant energy.
The tiny cells (it takes 800 mil-
lion to make a level teaspoonful'
are today being analyzed by pe-
troleum scientists for clues to the
prseence of underground oil de-
posits. And a new science known
as palvnology has grown out of the
study of pollen and spores 1 polo-
spores !.
According to an article in Pe-
troleum Today magazine, polo-
spores from prehistoric time are
recovere.l during the drilling of
an oil well. By careful analysis
i and comparison with previously
found samples, oil scientists are
able to determine the age of the
underground rock strata in w'nich
the polospores were found and the
environmental conditions under
which the rock was formed.
Once thse facts are obtained,
the oil detectives can then corre-
late them with information deriv-
oi from other sciences. For ex-
ample, it is believed that petrol-
eum was formed on the floor of
prehistoric seas. If polospores
brought up from a particular rock
stratum indicate that the rock is
part of an ancient lacoon. the
chances of finding oil in t'ne neigh-
borhood of that stratum are in-
creased.
Despite their minute size, which
requires use of powerful micro-
scopes in their analysis, polospores
have certain advantages for scien-
tific study.
The cells are produced in amaz-
ing quantities. The forests of a
single section of Sweden bring
forth 1 sextillion a year. And the
pollen and spores arc •lispersed
over the entire surface of the
earth. Thus they can be found in
virtually every perhistoric rock,
awaiting the oil'scientist's pleas-
ure.
Polospores are coated wlt'n an j
armor similar to the hucan finger-
nail. This permits them to with- i
stand the strong laboratory acids
needed to release them from their
•oek beds.
stiff wind.
Mrs. Priest was principal speak-
er at the dedication of the new"
hydrotherapy 'water treatment)
pool and speech ar.l education
wing.
Tne therapy pool was built at a
cost of about S12.000 through pro-
ceeds of a feeder sale here last
September with cattle donated by
West Texas ranchers.
Directors of the center indicate
the pocl building will Serve as a
permanent tribute to cattlemen
whose help led to the construction.
It is located in the southwest part
of the existing plant.
A host of dignitaries were on
hand Sunday afternoon at the dedi-
cation ceremonies along with par-
ents. children and friends cf t'lftv
center.
Serving as master of ceremonies
was Bob Kennedy, public relations
commitee chairman, who intro-
di"-ed. the special guests.
K. Oswait. president of the board
of directors of the WTRC. issued
the welcome, while Allen Baind.
past president of ihe organization,
introduced the former government
official.
Dr. V. II. Shoultz. Taylor-Jones
County Medical Society president,
praised the center and its work in
a brief address prior to the maiti^
speaker..
