Los Angels Do Not Appear To
Have Chance In American Race
Kdilors Note: This is .mother
in a series on the bis league teams. I
If the Los Angeles Angels are to
go anywhere in the American Lea-
gue this year they will need help
froin, well guess who.
On paper, at least, they do not
seem very capable i/| helping them-
selves. Although, they should be ;
able to generate some enthusiasm
and may get support from the An- 1
gclcnu fans who for one reason or
another dislike the Dodgers.

les entry in the American League

r red Haney is the general man-
ager. Bill Kigney, the old giant,
is the field manager. Both arc
talking with the dcliancc o'i vete-
ran soldiers who know they are go-
ing to be overrun but who intend
to take somebody with theni.
Thc Angels have some hitters
who can take advantage of thc
modest dimensions of their minor
league ball park Because that's
what it was. They will play in
W riggley field, formerly the home
of the I-os Angeles entry in thc
1'acilic Coast l-eague. It's only
| 315 feet to the walls in |>owcr a I-
I ley left center and right center
'lields.
With men of muscle like Ted
Klusxcwski, Bob Ccrv and Steve
Bilko shooting for those targets
the Angels should not go without
i uns.
It's worth mentioning that Uilko
clubbed 56 home runs in 1957 when
he played for Los Angeles. But
that was against minor league pit-
ching.
C'Kay, so it will be either Bilko
or Klusxcwski at first base. At se-
cond. the Angels, have Ken Aspro-
monte who hit a neat .288 for Cle-
veland last year. They also have
the vetei an wit, Rocky Bridges,
who can play second, short or third.
Ken Hamlin, obtained from Kan-
sas City in the winter draft, will
probably go at shortstop. Manager
Itigncy has been impressed with a
hot youngster, Jim Frcgosi, in
workouts but Jim will be shipped
out. He's only 18.
At third base the walking man.
Eddie Yost, will have to fight oil
a challenge from Gene Leek who
has been crashing the ball in spring
training. However, Gene has done
that before. Yost is an old pro and
will take a lot of dislodging.
Cerv will play somcuhcic in the
outfield and the other positions are
up lor giabs among Ken Hunt,
Jim McAuany, Faye Throncbcrry
and Alble Pearson. The catching is
only fair. Thc four backstops 'light-
ing for jobs arc Earl Averill. Del
II ice. Ed Sadow'ski and Bob Itod-
gcrs.
'lhe Los Angeles pitching docs
not shape up as formidable. And
that's perhaps a mild work. Thc
mound corps includes Ned Garvcr,
Duke Maas, Eli Grba, Tom Mor-
gan. Jerry Casaie. Ted Bowsficld,
Truman Clcvengcr, Ken McBridge
and some rookies.

Are Favored In
Net Semi-Finals
KANSAS CITY iJi-The predic-
tion is..for an alUOI>io-<inal in I'ne
NCAA basketball tournament which
reac'iics thc semi-final round in
Kansas City tonight.
Ohio State will meet St. Joseph's
of Pennsylvania in the epener of
tonight's twin.bill and Cincinnati
will take on Utah in the second
game.
Ohio and Cincinnati are strong
favorites to make it to the finals.
Ohio State has won 31 in a row
and will be attempting to become
thc fourth tepm in NCAA history
to win national titles back to baek.
Tne Buckeyes clobbered California.
75 to 55; in last year's title contest.
Once again Jerry Lucas and his
four helpers are the pick of thc
odds-makers who have installed
them a 14-point favorite.
In St. Joseph's they arc meeting
a team which has won 15 games
in a row and Jiavc impetus if noth-
ing else. However, they are meet-
ing a great group in the Buckeyes
from Columbus.
Cincinnati, has wen 20 in a row
and was ranked second in the final
poll to Ohio State. The Bearcats
arc a f>-point pick over a Utah
team which may not take the ocVIs
too sci iously. Thc Utcs have a
tradition of being tough in big
league tournaments.
The L'tcs also have a'great cen-
ter in Billy "The llill" McGill. I
lie's 6-3 and if he's having one'
