(A story of the cowboy as ho
was. and as ho is pictured today, i
FORT WORTH iSpU — Famous
names in Texas history will live
again in the memories of old-tim-
ers attending the 84th annual con-
vention o'i the Texas and South-
western Cattle Raisers Associa-
tion in Fort Worth, March 20-22.
A collection of elaborate conven-
tion badges of days gone by will
be there to remind them of early
days in the cattle business and of
men who were active in those days.
The activities of such men as R.
J. Kleberg, I. T. I'ryor, Ed Lasa-
ter, Capt. Richard King. Charles
Goodnight, Don Waggoner, and
hundreds of others who carved
cattle ranches out oi frontier coun-
try will be recalled by the sons i
and grandsons of the cattlemen;
o'i that era. |
The hardiness of those men might !
be illustrated by "Ike" Pryor. an
orphan at five years of age.
Although he i.eeame one of the |
most influential men in the cattle I
industry or his day. I'ryor never |
dreamed of becoming a cowboy I
arid owning his own herd until he j
was 18 years of age.
Following this decision, Pryor ex.
perienced all of the adventures :
and hardships known to the pioneer
Texas ranchman. He drove thou-
sands cfi head of cattle up the his-
toric Chisholm Trail during its
heyday; he experienced floods and
stampedes; he hunted buffalo, and
he made friends with the Indian.
But how different this liio from
that presently depicted on the na-
tion's television screens.
A few years back, an enterpris-
ing writer set out to discover Vor
himself jtist how extensive were
the differences between the actual
old-time cowboy and the modem
public image of him.
Of fifty old-time cowboys who
were interviewed, just one had
ever killed a man. and the victim
was a cow thief.
In these days there often is not
much e'ifort to distinguish between
cowboys and the hadmen of early
day frontier Texas. Fort Griffin,
lor a time the last to\yn out west
of all the Texas cattle country,
is usually represented as a village
given over to much lawlessness.
But the fact that the old town was
in the cattle country does not ne-
cessarily convict its cowboys of
playing a major part in its list of
crimes.
Henry Herron. who was a peace
o'il'icer during most of the time
when Fort Griffin was at its
worst, listed 11 persons, including
himse'li, who were either killed or
seriously wounded in gun lights
that were connected with his dut-
ies as an officer. Only two of the
11 casualties- were inflicted by
cowboys.
Many o'i the present tales of vio-
lence also center on the old trail j
drives to the north, but a look at <
factual accounts ol 92 of these driv-
es reveal that the violence was
neither as serious nor occurred as
often as sometimes supposed.
The usual crew for one of these
drives were lrom 10 to 20 men, and
a review of the "happenings" on
the 92 drives rvealcd that only
four oV the more than 1.000 cow-
boys hired for these drives had
boon 'Killed.
One had been killed in a drunken
brawl at a saloon, presumably by
some other cowboy, and three had
been killed by Indians.
Although Indians were a prob-
lem at times, most ot them could
he handled without resorting to
firearms, as illustrated by the
lollowing' true account which ap-
peared in The Cattleman magazine
in 1917. '
In the late 1870's when herd after
herd of Texas cattle were driven
North over the old Chisholm Trail,
Ike Pryor's herd was a Yew weeks
ahead ot the herd driven by Bill
Jackman. *
It was the custom Vor the man
following to pick up lost cattle and
drive them on until the herd they
were lost from was reached. Bill
Jackman's herd picked up a steer
lost by lkP Pryor and was takini?
Iiiin along for l"ke, with good in-
tentions. Hod liiver was •crossed
and Bill's herd had now gone
few days' drive into the Indian Na-
tion. One afternoon a band ol aboty
40 Indian warriors, including their
squaws, rode up to Bill Jackman s
herd and the Chief handed him
letter, whieh read as follows: i
"To All Trail Bosses:
"This man is a good Indian.^ I
know him personally. Treat him
well, give him beef, and you wHl
have no trouble in driving through
his country." Signed. Ike T. Pryojt.
After reading th0 letter. Bill rode
into the herd, and cut out Ike£
steer lor the Chief. They killtyt
the steer then and there and ha^t
a big least. Then Pill went fl|n
North with his herd, in peace,
thanking Ike l'or his good advice.,^

Three Jailed
After Hearing
In Beaumont
BEAUMONT UP) — A contempt
hearing in district court at Beau-
mont yesterday stemming from a
recent Jefferson County vice probe
by ahouso committee, ended with
all three defendants going to jail.
The contempt hearing resulted
from a county grand jury session
in which the trio had refused to
answer questions.
On advice of their attorney, they
also refused to answer questions
today be'i'ore District Judge Owen
Lord, and he ordered them to jail.
Two women alleged to bo opera-
tors of bawdy houses in port Ar-
thur and a Beaumont man were
the defendants. They are:
Margaret Infingor Richmond, id-
entified as operator of Midship
hotel in Port Arthur, but now liv-
ing in Galveston; Gertrude Infin-
ger Gustofson of Port Arthur; and
the operator of the Blue Mist din-
ner club in Beaumont, Jerry Nei-
zek.
All three were ordered by Judge
Owen Lord to take the witness
stand and all three, on the advice
oV their attorney, refused to ans-
wer questions. Judge Lord said
the state would grant immunity if
they answered the questions truth-
fully.
He fined the Richmond woman
8100 and sentenced her to three
days in jail. He ordered tho other
two to jail until they answered
questions.
The defense attorney, Joe Good-
win, said he is tiling an appeal.
China Rebuffs
U. S, Approach i
WASHINGTON i*t — The Ken-
nedy administration's first effort
to try to find some area of agree-
ment with Bed China has ended hi
a rebut'i from the communist^.
They've turned down a new U. S-
proposal for an exchange of news-
men. demanding as a condition
that the U. S. abandon Formosa.5
The new U. S. proposal ol tne
exchange of newsmen had been
made to Red China Tuesday atja"
meeting in Warsaw. ■
Officials in Washington said to-
day the olier was designed to sat-
isfy Chinese Communist insistence
on a reciprocal exchange oY news-
men. And we. in effect, offered
to give way on the Red China de-
mand. But it was rebuffed with
the new demand that we get out
oi Formosa.
There has been a deadlock over
IT. S. news coverage in Red China
since 1957.
At that time the state depart-
ment agreed that U. S. newsmen
would be permitted to go to the
Chinese mainland although travel
there by Americans in general still
is forbidden by the U. S.
But the Chinese did not issue any
visas for u. S. newsmen in gen-
eral. The move at Warsaw was ah
unsuccessful attempt to break this
deadlock. •;
