The news was published a
davs ago of the killing of
Smith, a former Commerce
at Antlers, Okla. The following
particulars have since been learned:
Smith, who was a deputy sheriff,
and another man went up about 30
miles in the mountains to serve
some papers on a man. It being late
they arranged to spend the night
with him. While at his house he an 1
Smith got into a row about some-
thing and the man ran into another
room and got a Winchester and shot
Smith. Smith’s companion jumped
out of the window and made hi ses-
cape. Smith’s slayer was arrested
and brought to Antlers late the next
day. He is said to have killed sever-
al men in his time.

BERLIN, Nov. 12. America's in-

foreign relations which dominated
the campaign just concluded, is the
opinion voiced by former Get man
ambassador Count von Bernstorff to
the United States in an address at

von Bernstorff said Germany should

Harding to reorganize th' League of

it is a fact that the unity of inter-

Commerce’s new public school
building was occupied Monday and
school is now being taught in same.
Those who go to this building are
the first three grades from the Cen-

The new building is a
frame structure 66xK6 feet,

room 14x16 feet, an office -12x11
feet, a hall 10x66 feet, a cross hall
plan, 10x26 feet, two toilet rooms and
three porches. It is ceiled with floor
ing and her.ted by stoves and is very
substantial and comfortable,

building in the city. The drinking
fountains being in the house, in bad
weather the children do not have to
leave the building from the time
they arrive in the morning until they
depart for home in the evening.
The building is located on the
south end of the city's lot on the cor
ner of Sycamore and Pecan streets,
bought for a new high school. It
cost between $6,000 and $9,000. D
D. Estes was the contractor. It ir

DALLAS, Texas, Nov. 19.—The
rat population of Texas is about 18,-
000,000 and the annual property
damage will run well above $75,000,-
000. These figures are based upon
careful investigations by the U. S.
Public Health Service throughout
the state. Rats not only destroy ami
pollute food in kitchens, pantrys and
cellars, but they burrow under
granaries destroying grain and feed-
stuffs as well as damaging houses
and bams by undermining them.
Anti-rat campaigns have been start-
ed from time to time and they have
been attended by some success.
However, the spread of the rodents
throughout the state during the past
two years has been so great that a
determined effort will be made to
exterminate them during the next
twelve months. This campaign is
being conducted by the A. & M. Col-
lege Extension Service, the State-
Health officer, the U. S. Public
Health Service and the Agricultural
department of the Texas Chamber of
Commerce.
The rat is prolific to say the least.
A male and female will under ordin-
ary circumstances bring up a family
of 120 or more rats within a year.
It is probably this tendency to in-
crease rapidly that gave the rat a
place in fable and song of the Mid-
dle Ages, notably the weird story of
the “Pied Piper of Hamlin."
Many creeds and races have orig-
inated in Asia and pushed outward
over the world, but none have been
more irresistable than the genius
First came the black rat,
Mus Rattus, striking
rop« about the middle
teenth century. It
closely by the brown rat,
Decumanus, which spread
throughout the continent,
England about 1728 where
Jacobites were delighted to attribute
its coming to the new House of Han
over. The rat entered America
through various ports, shortly after
overrunning Western Europe. The
black rat came first and the brown
rat followed becoming notorious for
its destructive habits in the city of
Chicago where grain elevators and
stock yards held forth ideal condi-
tions for rat breeding.
The rat plague in Texas has be-
come particularly serious during the
past few years, and various agricul-
tural and educational organizations
have assumed the role of the Pied
Piper and are endeavoring to hit
upon the note which cleared the lit
tie Austrian village of Hamlin.
