Save Yourselves
420 W. Walker Street
By A. W. WALLER
A boy is swimming in the river
anil becomes exhausted. It is evi-
tlent that he will drown Unless
someone comes to his rescue. A
man on the bunk sees him and
toss's a rope to him. The boy
seizes the rope and clings to it
while the man pulls him ashore.
'Hie hoy actually saves himself by
taking advantage of the means
offered.
In a similar way, we can save
ourselves by taking advantage of
the gospel of Christ which has
been placed in our reach. It is also
very evident that we too will be
lost in a world of sin if something
cannot be done to rescue us. But
that something has already been
(lone for us, ami it remains for us
tn take advantage of the means
already graciously provided for our
salvation.
la it strange, then, that we
should hear Peter proclaim to the
multitude assembled on the day of
Pentecost: "Save yourselves from
this crooked generation"? Acts
2:40. This is truly an indication
that man can and must save him-
self if he wishes to be saved. If
and whenever man appropriates to
himself the blessings contained in
the gospel, God will save him and
not until that time.
Surely, th«*re is no one who does
not wish to have eternal life. We
may have life eternal by submitt-
ing to the Lord's commandments.
And by so doing we actually save
ourselves.
"And this is life eternal, that they
should know thee the only true
G«hI, and him with whom thou
didst send, even Jesus Christ."
John 17:3. Do we know God? "And
hereby we know that we know
Kim, if we keep His command-
ments. He that saith, I know Him,
and keepeth not His command-
ments, is a liar, and the truth is
not in him," I John 54:3, 4. "Jesua
answered and said unto him, If a
man love me, he will keep my
word; and my Father will love him,
and we will come unto him, and
make our abode with him." John
14.23. "Not every one that saith
unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter
into the kingdom of heaven; but he
that doeth the will of my Father
who is in heaven." Matt. 7:81.
"... He became unto all them
that obey Him the author of etern-
al salvation." Heb. 5:!). "Ye are
my friends if ye do the things
which I command you." John 15-14.
<!od provided the gospel through
Christ His Son: the gospel is
God's power to save, and we must
render obedience to that gospel or
be forever lost. "And to you that
are afflicted rest with us, at the
revelation of the Lord Jesus from
heaven with the angels of His
power in flaming fire, rendering
vengeance to them that know not
t%d, and to them that obey not
the gospel." 2 Thess. 1:7-8.
