HARDWARE CO.

In 194l the owners announced
they would tear down the place
and build offices. But manager
Leslie Jeffers confesses "they
don't have the necessary finances
yet."
"We'll be around for a while,"
he says.
Though the hotel was built "com
paratively recently"—in l!Mi-J—it's
the oldest landmark in the Plaster
City, where anything put up yes-
terday is considered antique. In
those days Hollywood was just
avocado and orange ranches and
the hotel was a county resort.
Guests arrived on the one-track
street car line from Los Angeles,
15 miles away. The pedestrians on
the dirt road out front were sheep
and cows.
Then in 1012, Cecil B. DeMille
built his studio in a barn on Vine
St. half a mile away. By lSU.'i
Hollywood was a busy movie com-
munity and the hotel became the
'hangout for the glamor citizens of
the silent screen.
The old register boasts such
names as Wallace Reid, Jack War-
ner, Lon Chaney, Douglas Fair-
banks, Norma Shearer, L. B. .May-
er and the late Irving Thalberg.
Valentino married one of tin-
hotel f'uests, Jean Acker.
"Thev had a hard time convinc-
ing the room clerk they now could
live in one room," the mitnuger
tecalled.
Once the walls of three suites
had to be torn down to make room
for actor William Farnum, who ar-
rived with IT servants. Hollywood
life was gay thin. The manage-
ment had to nail down the first
floor windows to train guests to
come in the front door.
Today tlv hotel stands in faded
grandeur on the coiiner of Holly-
wood Blvd. and Highland Ave.
That dirt load became a jangly
street, and the pedestrians out
front are blonds in slacks.
The old hotel is nearly hidden
from ihi street by trees. Tourists,
and businessmen, instead of movie
stars, are its customers. Some
piaster work on the oiiental cupo-
las atop the hotel are crumbling,
a rusty hadiator suns on the roof.
A whitt -haired lady rocks on the
long veranda a-.d beams, "I don't
want to go to heaven. I just want
to stay in Hollywood."

Modern Problems
Found In Roman
Law Translation
AUSTIN, Texus, Feb. 28 (Spl)
Such "modern" problems as price
fixing, black markets, excessive
taxation and socialized medicine
were covered in Roman law.
The Theodosian Code, first of-
ficial lawbook of the Roman Em-
pire, has been translated by Dr.
Clyde Phurr, University of Texas
visi'ling professor of classical
languages.
Students of modern social and
eonomic legislation, state controls
and development of the "welfare
state" find many modern concepts
and practices derive from patterns
outlined in the Code. Never before
has it been tiunslated into any
language.
Dr. Pharr, former head of Van-
derbilt University's department of
classics, is an authority on source
materials and subsidiary literature
of Roman luw. He is general edi-
tor of a project* for collection,
translation and annotation of all
