Meal Prices, Not Supported,
May Be Among First to Fall
BY DOl'GLAS LAttSEN
MA Staff Correspondent
(Pttrr Edsou ft mention )
Tf*ASIfTNGTON—fNEA)—Defender of the |ovtrnmcn''' mn'rO"-
versial price upport prr.s;ram point to today's fantastic meat'
)>rices as their bi.-t argument for support.
Beef is hifher thsn any other b.i ic U S food But there is no
direct price support prodra.-r on cattle. And further th.- n that, they
claim, if it hartn t been for the rupport tprner.im before the war we |
would have had practically r.o meat for civilian consumption during
the war, and mu< h le- th« n we have t' lay.
This la?t argument i> bated • r the fact that a price rapport pr og: am
results in g.-e.-t quantities of rem bein< torcd over the y. ,.t The
corn that fed the cuttle during the u^r was partly corn rai-ed brfo e
the war. Without that coin, herds would have rr>. re ifepleted
than they have been during the past Co pie of y^ars, and wc would
probably be feeling a wor:v r.iat shortage t. day.
'THE whole problem i«n't :o • ■•nple a* th.it. h.o ifver First, corn
* which is an important 1 od lor cattle, is under the price >.;nport
program And eemd. pork which is an irrp> itant meat that has
always served a< a counterbalance again t the price id beef i a bo
tinder the .support prnjr im.
Thus it is obviou. that the government's price support program ha.
Contributed to high heef price® to some degree Ev en the experts
can't agree on how much. Increa ej demand foi beef is probably
the single mo^t important factor .-.fleeting its pi Ice.
The record corn crop expected tin year won't bring the price of
fceef down directly until about November or December of 19r>0 Be-
cause of the increa-ed supply of corn, at a favorable relationship to
the price of beef, theie v. .11 undoubtedly be more cattle bred thi„ year.
But this increased v-iprly c.t meat wiil not hit the market to -fleet
the price for a couple of years.
Pork, however, will coirc Into the picture before that. The big corn
crop should put more poik on the market by next fall The Depart-
ment of Agriculture * pig go .1 for 1949 calk, lor 60,000,000 pig-, an
increase of 17 per cent fit this ye-r'« crop.
There also isn't much hope fur l^mb prices coming down to help
the rather d'sm.l meat picture for the next 12 months. There is a
support program under wool. E .t i* hasn't tended to stop the long-
term decline in ti-e -ize of l-.-.b herd On'y when the general r ie.it
picture rr proves w ith the expected increase in potk next year can
a drop in lamb prices be expected.
pBOUABLY the met significant aspect of the absence of a price
* support prrgram on cattle is th it it makes the price of beef ex-
tremely sensitive to changes r. demand If nobody had ever dreamed
UP the parity price formula and the price support program, a pound
of hamburger today probably still would be giving the housewife a
big headache. Two simple statistic, explain why.
The average prewar annual consumption of meat per person n the
IT S was about 126 pound La-t vear that figure was up 155 pounds.
In the free of that k.nd of demand prices are bound to be hiqh. It's
an old stor> what hi« e i?ed this inert -e in demand. People have
more money to -pend tt« >e day- And they like sirloin steaks.
On the other hand, the slightest business recession would probably
have an immediate opjx. ite elTcct on meut prices. The day that a
family income goes dow n, that is the day that meat starts di appearing
|rom the table.
A business rece-sion could throw all the scholarly, complicated
yredxtions of the agricultural experts into a tucked bat. Meat would
probably be the first food to go do*n.
