"Acre8 And Pains" ••
Hated Best
Laugh of Year
If you are one of those people
in dire need gf a good old fash-
ioned belly laugh, or would just
like tu have an extra one on hand,
you'll find same at the Brecken-
ridge Public Library, passing in-
cognito under the name of "Acres
and Pains" by S. J. Perelman.
This is a delightful little book
(and it is little. 12B pages) that
is rated to bring a chuckle from
tht> most austere of readers. Mr.
Perelman, one of the deans of Am-
erican wit, describes the horrors
r.nd misfortunes that beset a poor
city man upon bis return to the
soil, tb,. soil in this case being in
Bucks County, Pa.
The Berelrnans bought their lit-
tle acreage in 1032 and have been
surrounded there by the hostile
flora and fauna ever since.
Whether you're a dirt farmer, a
city dweller, or one o£ those Sun-
day farmers you'll get a bang out
t this hook Perelman on any
subject - « good enough for most
people Perelman turned loose on
..a subject elos,. to, the beam and
pockeibooks of thousands of dewy
eyed eitv dweller-, is I he m,r,tet

Limestone Puzzle
Solved by Stale
GLVMPIA, Wash.—Despite Dan-
iel Webster, limestone is now a
mineral, according to the legal
minds of the state attorney gen-
eral's office.
Furthermore, Washington stute
is going to sell limestone as u
mineral for considerably more
profit than if it were juit plain
l-ock or a material such as sand or
gravel.
The question arose Vriien the
commissioner of public lands asked
if he could sell limestone on a four
per cent royalty busis as "mineral,"
or at five cents per. yard as "mate-
rial."
Frustrated assistant attorney
generals assigned to the matter
could not find a court definition of
limestone, but did find two laws
passed by the state legislature. One
called limestone "mineral," the
other, "material."
Things were in a pickle until the
ntnte geologist came to the rescue.
The geologist-said limestone was
a rock rather than a mineral (so
does Webster) but that it actually
was a marble which was closer to
"mineral" than "material."
With Ifmestone's family tree
thus established, the land commis-
sioner is doing a brisk business in
the new-found "mineral" deposits.

URGES STARTING CHILDREN
TO SCHOOL AT TWO YEARS
NEW #YORK.—Rose Schneider-
inann, president of the Women's
Trade Union League, believes the
day will come in this city when
children will start to sehool at the
age of two.
"It's no longer practical," she
said, "to tell all mothers of small
children that they should stay
home with their babies. Working
women have made tremendous
progress in our time. Women have
better pay than ever before, chil-
dren have better care and living
standards are higher."
The League, she said, is now
taking a poll of women to deter-
mine how they feel about it.
