Saw Future in I*. S.
The number of Dr. Stejneger's
years were in line with his family.
His father lived to be iMk The son
was horn on (let. 30, 1851, in
Beriren, Norway. His paternal
trramlt'ather was born in Hamburg.
Germany, but moved to Norway,
went into business and married a
Norwegian jirt. The name then
was spelled Stemetrer, the German
version, tlr. Stejticker changed it
to the Noiwerian -pellinc about

Hi- higher education started at
the University of Kristiana (now

family business. In 1880 his family
business went into bankruptcy.
That was the break of fate that
sent Dr. Stejnejjer to America,
where he believed he would have a

which he startetl to study on his
own volition when he was tK.
He eante to the t'nited States in
1881. Dr. VVetmore writes:
"He has told me with some
amusement of how he .-at for 5
time on a park bench near the
(Smithsonian) building, develop-
ing hi- English vocabuary by
means of a pocket dictionary be-
fore entering to call on Frof. Baird,
secretary of the institution."
Bird Manual Still rset!
Dr. Stejnetrer went to work im-
mediately. Before long he was
a,-ked to submit an outline for a
volume on birds in a natural his-
tory series. He did that and fol-
lowed through with an introduc-
tion and the opening chapters in
what he considered a rough draft.

talked about the trfns he'd take
when gasoline rationing was
ended. Used to pore over Jfoadutap <
—checking uiileauea. and charting
routes.
Now Ben's taking quite a lot of
ribbing. Soon as rationing was
lifted, he decided he liked staying
home, puttering in the garden,
playing chess, sharing a plea-ant
glass of beer with friend-.
" Shucks," admits Ben sheep-
ishly, "as soon as you can go, tht'it

F t orn where I sit, ^utt'f it pretty
common trait in human nature.
Take that glass at beer, for in-
stance. During Prohibition, Ben
was nursing an insatiable thirst.
But come repeal. Ben suddenly
tinds he's happy with a friendly,
'moderate glass of beer—and noth-
ing more. Yep—just tett folks the
sky's the limit, and they'll settle

As an example of Dr. Stejneger's
thoroughness. Dr. VVetmore re-
ports that recently a Danish ieit-

After a few years as an orni-

the department of reptiles at

and soon was as absoibed in her-

world authority.
During' his 58 years at Smith-

wide variety of scientific activity.
He made three widely separated
trips to the Bering Sea area to
study the state of the seal popula-
tion. On one occasion ne was near--
ly killed. The episode is told by Dr.
VVetmore like this:
Intrigued by Ripples
"One of his stories of rhi - expe-
dition relates to hi:: first artenfft
to handle the light skin kayak of
the natives. Almost immediately ho
overturned and remained suh
merged head down, raoght by the
legs and unable to extricate him-
self. As he slowly suffocated, his
thoughts were puzzled, since ac-

by the play of the lights on the
bottom below him through 'he sur-

that he could think of nothing -ise.
He regained consciousness on rile
beach, having been rescued and iv
vived by his companions."
The last of many trips he made
to Europe was in ly;;o, when he re-
turned to Oslo to attend the '.-•tii
