of being the first students to
enroll at the college, and the
first two to complete the two-
year course of studies and
receive the A.A. Degree.
Miss Hastings and Miss Tal-
ley presented a plaque to the
college during the graduation
reception that reads: “To Bro.
Thomas, Bro. Webb and Bro.
Conner, In Appreciation for
your Dedication in Building
College of America, from the
First Graduates, August 24,
1976, Doylene Hastings, Ruth
Talley”.
John Beckloff, editor of the
Christian Chronicle and vice-
president of African Christian
Schools, Inc., pointed out that a
recent study of missionaries of
the churches of Christ showed
that 65 percent came from
agricultural or “Blue-collar”
families and 85 percent were
members of small congrega-
tions in their growing years. He
stressed to the graduates and
audience that Christian growth
begins at home and leads to
good works, soul-winning and
evangelism with the gospel.
Allan Rowe of Petersburg led
the invocation and Gene Con-
ner, instructor of English and
Bible at the college, led the
benediction. Rowe was a mem-
ber of the original class, but
had to quit school due to health
problems. Music was provided
by recordings of the Harding
College A Capella Chorus.

of medical mission stations
being maintained by the
church, and this situation can
be improved, but few know how
to start. Hopefully, the Sympo-
sium will answer many of the
questions of those who would
like to help.”
“We hope to examine and
discuss ways of exalting Christ
in the healing arts,” he contin-
ued, adding that anyone inter-
ested in missions, especially
medical missions was invited.
“A great variety of medical
abilities are useful on the
mission field,” he said. “This
symposium is open to anyone
with a related interest, such as
nurses, dentists, optometrists,
lab technicians, x-ray techni-
cians, medical students, doctors
and others.
“We want to also invite
church leaders and elders of
congregations desiring to spon-
sor or help support this type of
effort. We hope to also measure
interest in the support of pre-
ceptorships, where medical stu-
dents can spend their elective
year on the mission field.”
The symposium has been
held almost yearly since its
inception in 1969, when the first
meeting was held on the Hard-
ing College campus. The sixth
annual seminar was hosted by
the Union Avenue Church of
Christ in Memphis last fall.
Housing will be provided by
members of the Pleasant Val-
ley congregation. Location of
the church’s building is the

pleasant Valley Church of
Christ in Little Rock. Registra-
tion will begin at 5 p.m.

Theme addresses will be pre-
sented by Jim Citty, a Searcy
physician; Henry Farrar, a
noted medical missionary to
Nigeria currently practicing
medicine in Searcy; Wendell
Broom, a missions professor at
Abilene Christian University;
and Ron Huddleston, former
medical missionary to Tanzania
and now practicing in Hearne,
Texas.
Life Group sessions will cen-
ter around the topics “Medical
Missions, USA;” “Faith Main-
tenance in the Education
Years;” and “Accepting Our
Opportunities.” There will also
Loy Mitcha he five one-hour special interest
classes in the three-day sched-
ule of activities.
The purpose of the Sympo-
sium, according to Smith, is to
foster interest in medical mis-
sions, both in the United States
and abroad, among health care
field personnel in the churches
of Christ.
“We would like to see more
professional medical people and
young people involved in mis-
sion work,” Smith said. “There
