HOLLYWOOD.—Susaa Douglas,
one of Hollywood's newest star-
lets, arrived in America from
Czechoslovakia six years ago with,
just four words of English.
The words were "ice cream" and
"funny face," and she used them
indiscriminately for a week.
■"The first words t learned on the
boat coming over were 'ice cream"
because it was served for dinner
the first night,'' she explained.
'Then I got acquainted with a dog
on the ship,, and tbe American; lady
who owned him told me his name
was 'Funny Face/
"That was all I knew when I
landed in New York* I ordered ice;
cream for every meal after that
arid I called everyone T met funny

"I went to the movies constantly
from the moment I landed Ere New
York. Sometimes. I sat through a
picture two and three times, then
came- back the next day to see it
several times again. -
"I mouthed the words after the
players and memorized! the lines
so I could practice their diction at
home. I learned more and better
English that way than any amount
of schooling could have taught
me."
When she finished high school,
Susan got a ob as a page In Metro-

approaching cargo plane radioed
the control tower that it was com-
ing in "for fuel and hay-" The
plane, it turned out, was carrying
race horses.
