Concerning the New Century.
This is the 1st day of January,
1900; but are we living in the 20lh
century? This question has been
aggitated both by the press and
the j>eople for quite awhile, and
we find that there is a diversity of
opinions on the subject. The writ-
— was recently asked bis views on
the question by one who contends
that with the close of the year
1899 the 20th century began. He
seemed to be surprised at my re-
ply when I told him there was yet
twelve months of tbe 19th century.
In all that has been written or said
we have never took but the one
view of the matter and that is, that
tbe last day of tbe year 1900 will

formed us that they will put in the and therefore the first day of the
year 1901 will be tbe first day of
the 20th century. The idea that
we are already in the 20th century
fine girl Sunday evening, seems to grow out of the fact that
we have discarded the 8 entirely
and uae the 9 in ite place. Twelve
8 for the 9, which signified that^we
had passed over the year ’98 and
But in
discarding the 8 today we discard
its fixed place for the past 100
years. Remember, however, it
, took ita place beside the figure 1
one year before the tbe 18th cen*
, tury was out. just as the 9 now
takes tbe place of tbe 8 one year
before the 19th century is otrt. Do
we not always use a figure 12
months before it completes tbe
count of the year it represents?
We began using tbe 9 in the unit’s
place tn writing the date 12 months
ago, but tbe year it was counting
was not a whole year until last
night at midnight. Bo now we
