School Board (cont, from pa, 1)
Higgs said she was very Impressed with the teaching she
saw. "We must get back to where we are concerned with the
whole child,” she said.
Harrison said one of the teachers combined two subjects
that she taught. English and history, which meant that the
students stayed in the same class for two hours but were
taught different subjects on the same theme.
One of the benefits of the program is that learning is put
back into the laps of the students, father than always being
the burden of the teacher. Harrison said.
"One of the statements made is our students are grade-
driven, and this puts the emphasis away from the grade."
she said.
Higgs said in the beginning of the transition into an
integrated curriculum, Sanger could try coordination
between teachers rather than all integration.
A major principle of the Coalition of Essential Schools,
which Biggerstaff would like to implement at Sanger, is.
'Teachers must break away from the traditional approach
of teacher-as-deliverer-of-instructional-services. Teacher-
as-coach provokes students to learn how to learn and then
teach themselves."
Biggerstaff said he also would like to start a program
where seniors do a project before graduation that shows
their competency. Such projects are done in other states,
and they involve seniors giving a presentation before
teachers, possibly students, and experts in a field being
presented.
Also at the Nov. 12 meeting, school trustees voted to
lease 35 acres of pasture land near the high school to Alan
Pruitt for $450 per year. Pruitt currently leases the land. Jewell Ester Newton, 93,
The board also approved the appointment of 14 of Sanger, died Friday, Nov.
